The Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services (“PSES”) has significant oversight and involvement in the public security and emergency services through its various divisions and operations. The department is responsible for the administration of law enforcement, correctional services, policing and police oversight and public safety. The Ministry supports crime prevention and restorative justice programs, as well as programs and services to support victims of crime including those affected by domestic violence and human trafficking. The Ministry also coordinates large scale emergency and disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery programs and initiatives.

Role

Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Public Security Division the Executive Director, Law Enforcement Oversight will advance our commitment to the provision and oversight of effective policing in Alberta communities and lead the development and implementation of specialized policing and law enforcement programs in Alberta. This will include auditing police services and overseeing the Provincial Police Service Agreement in Alberta to ensure that provincial policing priorities are established and addressed. The Executive Director will guide seven unique program areas including the First Nations Policing programs, guide development of standards, indigenous policing initiatives and identify provincial policing priorities. The incumbent will also administer key priorities, such as the policing support grants and oversee the administration of the Provincial Police Service Agreement, the Police Act, Security Services and Investigators Act, and the Peace Officer Act as well as provide oversight and provincial input and guidance in relation to integrated policing services within Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT). Consulting with diverse stakeholders will be critical to develop policing solutions that result in integrated services and enhanced public safety.

 

 

Qualifications

As an influential and highly credible leader, you will build networks, lead, coach, and mentor your team to support their capacity development. You will have solid strategic analysis skills and sound working knowledge of policing, police oversight, public security, knowledge of Indigenous policing and the criminal justice system. Your strong communication skills and political acumen will enable you to lead projects cross-ministry as you develop strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. You will have a proven track record of consulting with stakeholders and negotiating agreements on contentious issues. Experience with policy development and the ability to manage complex issues will be key to your success. A related degree or a degree combined with related experience in the government sector is preferred.

 

 

Salary

$5,896.65 - $7,749.28 bi-weekly / ($153,902.57 - $202,256.21/ year)

This is a temporary assignment for one (1) year.
