Role Responsibilities

Are you looking for a role where you can actively provide paralegal support through the use of technology to the legal teams within the Legal Service Division? Do you thrive in a dynamic and collaborative work environment? Legal Services Division is currently seeking two qualified Evidence Production Paralegals. These positions require you to work closely with lawyers, support staff, representatives from client ministries, and others. The successful candidates require the ability to learn and understand complex technology, and they need to be familiar with legal processes and procedures in civil litigation.

 

The Evidence Production Team (EPT) manages records for the division, mostly in civil and aboriginal litigation involving the Alberta government. Its core business is collecting, processing, organizing, reviewing, and producing records for use in litigation and judicial reviews, with the assistance of document eDiscovery software (Nuix Discover).

 

In addition to carrying out traditional paralegal tasks, the paralegals also train and advise the lawyers and support staff who use Nuix Discover, and they serve as Nuix Discover case administrators.

 

As the successful candidate you will possess:

 

  • Knowledge of and aptitude for technology, especially document production and eDiscovery software.
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision and produce an accurate and detailed work product on assigned projects under sometimes tight deadlines.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment.
  • A positive, solution oriented and service focused attitude.
  • Experience reviewing and coding documents for relevance or privilege.

 

To be successful in this role, you must be able to work independently and handle a high-volume workload while meeting necessary deadlines. Attention to detail and an ability to encourage and work as part of a team will be necessary to succeed in this role.

Qualifications

2-year related diploma for example Paralegal or Legal Assistant diploma plus 3 years progressively responsible related experience, such as legal assistant, paralegal or relatable role.

 

Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

 

Assets:

  • Familiarity with Nuix Discover or other eDiscovery software
  • Securing evidence and maintaining chain of custody
  • Knowledge of the Alberta Rules of Court, civil litigation processes and procedures, and in particular, specialized knowledge surrounding the review and production of records and evidence in civil litigation
  • Direct related Paralegal diploma
  • Experience in aberrational and civil litigation
  • Proven experience with different systems and technology withing a legal setting.

Hours Of Work: Monday to Friday, 7.25 hours of work per day.

 

Location: Edmonton.

 

Please Note: There are 2 full-time 2-year temporary positions. This competition may be used for future wages, temporary and permanent paralegal vacancies in our division at the same or lower classification.
