Reporting to the Manager, Health System Architecture, the Enterprise Architect plays a pivotal role in supporting department-wide, government, and health system-wide initiatives through expert information technology services. This senior-level position ensures that initiatives adhere to sound Information Technology principles and practices aligned with Government of Alberta and industry standards.

As a key technical leader, you will collaborate with business units, Information Technology operations, leadership, partner organizations, and vendors to ensure Information Technology solutions are technically robust, aligned with business needs, and represent sustainable and strategic Information Technology investments.

Role Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly skilled Enterprise Architect to join our Information Management/Information Technology team. In this critical leadership role, you will provide architectural oversight and strategic guidance across projects, programs, government enterprise, partners, vendors, and jurisdictions. Your expertise will help maximize Information Technology investments, reduce enterprise risk, and ensure that technology solutions align with organizational goals and architecture standards.


The job responsibilities include:

1. Architectural Alignment and Oversight

  • Act as the central point for resolving architectural issues across portfolios.
  • Participate in departmental and cross-departmental architectural teams.
  • Contribute to Information Management/Information Technology planning and the Enterprise Information Management/Information Technology Planning Committee (EIPC).
  • Identify architectural dependencies and their impact across projects.
  • Monitor the development of Information Management/Information Technology solutions to ensure alignment.
  • Ensure significant architectural decisions are properly documented.


2. Strategic Architecture Planning

  • Develop and maintain current, transitional, and future-state architecture roadmaps.
  • Identify and address gaps between current state and strategic goals.
  • Propose refinements to existing government and system-wide architectures.
  • Maintain a comprehensive inventory of architecture assets for stakeholder access.


3. Asset Reuse and Optimization

  • Promote reuse of existing Information Management/Information Technology assets and identify value-adding new assets.
  • Guide project teams on architecture direction and available tools or components.
  • Support application design that encourages integration and reuse.


4. Asset Management and Investment Optimization

  • Define architecture expectations at all Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) phases.
  • Guide projects on the use of architecture best practices and methods.
  • Ensure work plans include the appropriate deliverables and architecture methods.
  • Continuously improve architecture asset management processes.

  • Evaluate Information Management/Information Technology solution designs for compliance with organizational standards.
  • Report on the usage and contribution of Information Management/Information Technology assets across initiatives.
  • Identify and address architecture misalignments and assess associated risks.


6. Emerging Technology Leadership

  • Maintain up-to-date technical expertise through ongoing professional development.
  • Research and evaluate emerging technologies relevant to organizational needs.
  • Lead and support proof-of-concept efforts for new technologies.
  • Share findings and insights through seminars, workshops, and executive reports.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standards
University graduation in a related discipline plus four years related experience; or equivalent as described.

Equivalency: A related two-year diploma in computer technology or a related discipline from a recognized postsecondary institution and six years related experience; or a related one-year certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution and seven years related experience.

The following experience is required: 

  • A broad range of experience and technical competencies.
  • Overall business knowledge of strategies, guidelines, policies, legislation, and processes of the organization.
  • In depth knowledge of enterprise architecture, methods, tools, and frameworks.
  • Experience of solution development approaches such as, including modern software design methodologies, service-oriented and microservices architectures, cloud infrastructure, and container-based development.
  • Understanding of all aspects of the software development life cycle.
  • Experience with agile development methodologies.
  • Experience as a technical leader on multi-disciplinary development teams, with the ability to guide solution design and ensure alignment with architecture standards.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices and processes.
  • Knowledge of designing enterprise architecture for healthcare organizations, including interoperability.


The following experience is considered as assets:

  • Any architecture related certification will be considered as asset.


The following experience will be given preference:

  • Hands-on with EA methodology, frameworks, and tooling.
  • Built and maintained enterprise architecture repositories, taxonomies, and standard catalogue.
  • Direct experience leading enterprise-wide architecture/technical initiatives.
  • Preference will be given to candidate with over 2 years of experience as Architect or Technical Lead.

Notes

Hours of work are 8:15 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday. This is a full-time position working 36.25 hours per week.
