The SEPI branch is a centre of excellence within the Consultation, Land and Policy CLP division. SEPI provides a strong foundation of policy development, strategic engagement, expert advice and relationship building through engagement, education, training, and capacity funding to ensure Alberta fulfills its duty to consult in matters related to land and natural resource management while considering the needs of all parties; including partner ministries, Indigenous communities and organizations, industry, municipalities and regulators.
Role Responsibilities
Are you a dynamic, collaborative individual with experience in fostering relationships and engaging Indigenous communities? Do you have a strong understanding of land management, resource development, and Indigenous consultation policies? If so, we want to hear from you!
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Lead Indigenous engagement and consultation for Crown-led land and natural resource initiatives, ensuring alignment with legal and policy frameworks.
- Advise GoA ministries on strategic engagement approaches and best practices, including identifying relevant Indigenous groups, providing document review and analysis, and recommending legal input.
- Foster and manage relationships with Indigenous communities, cross-ministry partners, and stakeholders to support collaborative policy development and reconciliation.
- Provide strategic input to senior leadership on impacts of land/resource projects, including preparing briefings, agendas, and background materials.
- Support internal team effectiveness by contributing to planning, mentoring staff, and improving operational processes and collaboration.
- Coordinate the Indigenous Knowledge Keepers Circle (IKKC) initiative, including relationship-building, planning, and reporting.
- Build capacity across government by promoting consistent engagement practices, delivering training, and updating internal procedures.

Qualifications
A University degree in a related field (Natural Resources, Environmental Management, Environmental Sciences, Indigenous Studies, Public Policy, History, Political Science, Geography, Law, Anthropology, etc.) supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible related experience is required.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Required Experience:
• Project management experience, including planning, execution and records management.
• Written communication excellence, including reports and documentation.
• Public participation and Indigenous engagement processes.
• Research and analysis experience in policy and/or natural resource management.
Assets:
• Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous peoples, governance, culture, history, and community dynamics.
• Political acumen.
• Familiarity with historical and current legislation impacting First Nations and Métis peoples in Alberta and Canada.
• Education or experience with land and natural resource management and associated legislation and regulations in Alberta.
• In-depth knowledge of engagement planning, , problem solving and issues management techniques.
• Established networks with Indigenous communities, including specialized training or lived experience.
• Understanding of current land and natural resource management practices in Alberta, including economic development opportunities .
