Role Responsibilities
About the Role
As an Economist, you will play a critical role in shaping evidence-based policy and strategic decisions for the ministry. This position combines advanced economic analysis, business intelligence, and project leadership to support Alberta’s municipalities and ministry programs.
Key Responsibilities
Business Intelligence
• Assess and recommend enhancements to the ministry’s Business Intelligence Environment (BIE).
• Design and implement solutions to expand data assets, including integrating new datasets and updating existing ones.
Economic Analysis & Analytics
• Develop and implement data collection and analysis methodologies.
• Apply advanced techniques such as forecasting, modeling, and cost-benefit analysis to evaluate trends and impacts.
• Provide economic evidence to inform policy advice, strategic planning, and legislative reviews.
Project Management
• Lead large-scale data projects, including task delegation, mentorship, and technical oversight.
• Manage timelines, coordinate meetings, and ensure successful project delivery.
Communications
• Design and deliver training initiatives for staff and stakeholders.
• Translate complex technical information into clear, user-friendly formats.
Supervision
• Provide guidance and oversight for cross-branch initiatives and project teams.

Qualifications
Required
• A Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science
• 4 years progressively responsible related experience in statistical, analytical or research experience.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Assets
• Familiarity with relevant legislation and regulations, including: Safety Codes Act, New Home Buyer Protection Act, Government Organization Act, Protection of Privacy Act, Insurance Act, and Supplementary Accounting
Principles and Standards Regulation.
• Understanding of general accounting principles.
• Expertise in advanced economic and statistical methodologies, including: Statistical systems (e.g., SAS), index and benchmark development, net impact analysis, cost-benefit analysis, ROI, predictive modeling, and
performance indicators.
• Knowledge of research methodology, change management, systems thinking, evaluation, and knowledge dissemination processes.
• Familiarity with department and stakeholder data sources (e.g., Safety Codes Council, federal financial and statistical data, census and election data) and related systems (eSite, STATS CAN, FERS, NHBPS).
• Understanding of Government of Alberta IT management policies and ministry IT procedures.

This position is a Permanent position with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm).
