Role Responsibilities

Our Employee Relations Consultant (ERC) positions with the Government of Alberta (GoA), may be a fit for you! As the ERC, you will work with specialists in Disability Management, Workforce Restoration, Labour Relations, Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness (just to name a few), and a team of HR Business Partners in your support to managers who are building engaging and inclusive workplaces.
As the ERC you will be a part of a specialist team in an HR Portfolio team assigned to support a group of clients in specific departments. You will report to either a Team Lead or a Manager while working alongside your HR Business Partner colleagues.
As the ERC you will work to;
• Build an understanding of your client’s business, unique worksite cultures, and the GoA’s HR governance frameworks.
• Provide strategic advice and coaching on complex and contentious Employee Relations matters related to collective agreement interpretation, performance, behaviour, or conduct in the workplace.
Your well-rounded professional experiences and skillsets in addressing employee relations issues in human resources that will help you excel in this role are:
• Your ability to build relationships, network, and collaborate with a variety of teams.
• Your experiences in coordinating dispute resolutions processes such as grievances in an unionized environment with stakeholders (i.e. management, employees, and union representatives).
• Your ability to analyze complex problems and provide outcome focused solutions.

The incumbent must also be able to research and develop recommendations on policies, strategies and frameworks taking advantage of opportunities to readily adapt to changes required for organization success.
Build Collaborative Environments: Incumbent must be a strong communicator and set up processes or structures to facilitate meaningful communication. The incumbent will also lead and/or support training initiatives and encourage exchange of information and ideas.
Develop Networks: Proactively connect and build trust with peers and executives in PSC, ministry clients, jurisdictional contacts and other experts in their field.
Develop Self and Others: As the technical expert in their field it is critical that the incumbent create an environment of learning and sharing expertise. Demonstrating the desire to invest in the development of the long-term capability of self and others is important to ensure program excellence.
Qualifications
Minimum requirements for this role are:
University graduation in a related field plus two years of related experience; or a related two-year diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution and four years of related experience; or a related one-year certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution and five years of related experience.
Working knowledge of relevant legislation governing HR practices including; employment standards codes, human rights legislation, labor relations codes, and the interpretation of collective bargaining agreements.
Assets:
• Experience managing grievances, including arbitration preparation.
• Experience with advising leadership on appropriate disciplinary outcomes and drafting supporting documentation.
• Strong communication, both in verbal and written form.
• Ability to handle confidential or politically sensitive information and escalate issues when appropriate.
Candidates without the prerequisite experience should clearly indicate in their cover letter what transferrable skills they possess that would make them an ideal candidate, as well as indicate why they are interested in specializing in Employee Relations.
