The Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services (“PSES”) has significant oversight and involvement in the public security and emergency services through its various divisions and operations. The department is responsible for the administration of law enforcement, correctional services, policing and police oversight and public safety. The Ministry supports crime prevention and restorative justice programs, as well as programs and services to support victims of crime including those affected by domestic violence and human trafficking.  The Ministry also coordinates large scale emergency and disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery programs and initiatives through the Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA).

Role

Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, the Executive Director of Community and Public Safety Services is responsible for providing strategic leadership to a multi-disciplinary team delivering a broad range of public safety programs in areas covering victims services, crime prevention grants and community initiatives, combatting human trafficking and Indigenous policy and services.

 

The Executive Director oversees a team of three Directors, ensuring branch operations are strategically aligned with the Public Safety and Emergency Services business plan. This senior leadership role is accountable for guiding policy and legislative development, fostering intergovernmental coordination, leading stakeholder engagement and strategic planning to support responsive and effective program delivery.

 

As a trusted advisor to ministry executives and elected officials, the Executive Director contributes to key legislative and platform priorities and leads proactive monitoring of crime prevention and public safety trends. The position ensures branch programs, services, and policies are integrated, coordinated, and compliant with applicable legislation and policy frameworks. The Executive Director also builds and maintains strategic partnerships across a broad stakeholder network, including ministries, law enforcement agencies, Indigenous groups, other jurisdictions, and community organizations. The role collaborates with senior leaders across the Ministry and Division to advance legislative and operational policy initiatives, including those within Public Security and Correctional Services Divisions.

 

 

Qualifications 

As the Executive Director, your background includes extensive senior leadership experience, with deep expertise in policy development, program management and strategic decision-making. You have a proven track record of navigating complex issues and influencing outcomes effectively. You have successfully led complex initiatives across jurisdictions, particularly in community public safety, victim services, and justice system frameworks. Your strong analytical and problem-solving skills support effective resolution of operational challenges, and your sound knowledge of the Criminal Justice System and relevant legislation enhances your leadership impact. You maintain broad networks within and beyond government, consistently building collaborative partnerships with community stakeholders. A skilled team leader, you are recognized for your strategic thinking, project management, and ability to deliver results in dynamic environments. Your advanced communication and negotiation skills enable you to engage effectively across diverse stakeholder groups. With a forward-looking, service-oriented mindset, you foster high-performing teams, through mentorship and coaching you build organizational capacity for the future. A bachelor’s degree is required, including previous senior leadership experience; a master’s degree is considered an asset.

 

 

Salary

$5,234.94- $6,879.68 bi-weekly ($136,631 - $179,559 yearly)

 

 

Notes

Occasional travel will be required for this position.
