The Metis Settlements Appeal Tribunal (MSAT) is an operationally independent, quasi-judicial agency whose overriding consideration is to preserve and enhance Métis culture and identity, and to strengthen Métis self-governance under the laws of Alberta. As a legislated alternative to court, MSAT strives to resolve disputes through adjudication, mediation and education in a manner that is fair, timely and cost-effective. Role Responsibilities

In this role as Dispute Resolution Officer, you will facilitate the resolution of disputes about land, membership, and oil and gas development on eight Metis Settlements in order to carry out the Tribunal’s legislated mandate as a quasi-judicial branch of Alberta’s Metis Settlements self-government system.

You will be responding to inquiries from Metis Settlement Council members, Settlement staff, its members, oil and gas company representatives and their agents respecting the Metis Settlements Act, Metis Settlements General Council Policies, Land Registry Regulations technical criteria relating to surface rights, land and membership issues.

Community outreach plays an important role in the Appeal Tribunal’s dispute resolution activities. By going out to the Metis Settlements and meeting with Settlement members and elected officials, the Appeal Tribunal ensures that those who rely on its services have a better understanding of its functions and processes.  You will be a part of this outreach and travel to the communities to provide presentations to settlement members, schools and Settlement Councils.

Qualifications

University graduation in a related field plus 4 years of progressively responsible experience.  
Equivalencies of directly related education or experiences on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education will be considered.  



You will have comprehensive computer skills including internet research and Microsoft office applications.  

 

Preferences: 

  • Knowledge of the Metis Settlements governance and administrative structures.
  • Knowledge of the Metis Settlement Act, Metis Settlements General Council policies, Metis Settlements Land Registry Regulations, Settlement bylaws and all related legislation. 


Assets:

  • Strong organizational skills and high level of attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities simultaneously. 
  • Knowledge and/or experience with conflict resolution including mediation, conciliation and arbitration.
  • Knowledge of the Metis Settlements Appeal Tribunal and its services 
  • Strong communication and written skills
  • Experience in presentation/facilitation or public speaking
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within a team environment
