Salary: $5,139.30 to $6,526.16 bi-weekly ($134,135 - $170,332/year).
Help shape the future of consumer protection in Alberta. As Director, Strategic Policy and Engagement, you will lead high-impact policy, legislative modernization, public engagement and consumer education initiatives that influence the protections available to Albertans and the regulatory environment in which Alberta businesses operate.
The Consumer and Citizen Services Branch is responsible for administering legislation and programs that protect consumers and support a fair, competitive marketplace in Alberta. The branch oversees a complex regulatory framework, including 10 Acts and 48 Regulations governing business and consumer interactions. Its work includes licensing regulated professions and businesses, educating consumers and businesses about their rights and responsibilities, and enforcing consumer protection laws when non-compliance occurs. The branch also leads policy and legislative initiatives to ensure Acts and regulations remain responsive to emerging marketplace issues, while providing access to consumer protection information and promoting awareness and understanding of Alberta’s consumer protection framework.
Role Responsibilities
As the Director of Strategic Policy and Engagement, you will provide strategic leadership for the development and modernization of consumer protection policy, legislation and regulations. You will oversee evidence-based research, stakeholder and public engagement, consumer education, strategic planning, and the people and resources required to advance branch and ministry priorities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading strategic policy development and providing evidence-based advice on emerging consumer issues, marketplace trends and opportunities.
- Directing legislative and regulatory review initiatives to ensure consumer protections respond to evolving technological, social and economic conditions.
- Establishing effective policy standards, processes and plans that support timely, high-quality legislative and regulatory outcomes.
- Designing public engagement and stakeholder consultation initiatives that incorporate diverse perspectives and strengthen support for change.
- Building partnerships across government, with legal and policy specialists, and with federal-provincial counterparts to advance shared priorities.
- Overseeing consumer education strategies, targeted engagement sessions and public information resources that improve awareness of marketplace rights, obligations and best practices.
- Modernizing consumer education approaches through innovative digital tools and emerging technologies.
- Guiding comparative research, environmental scans, policy analysis and the responsible collection and use of consumer protection data and organizational knowledge.
- Developing operational and strategic plans aligned with branch, ministry and government priorities.
- Managing employees, budgets and program resources while promoting learning, innovation, accountability and high performance.

Qualifications
University degree in Business administration, Public Administration, or a related field supplemented by 6 years of related experience.
Required
- 3 - 5 years of progressive experience in management and leadership roles within a public sector environment.
- Strong capability in strategic policy development, legislative or regulatory analysis, stakeholder engagement and evidence-based decision-making.
- Experience working collaboratively with senior leaders, internal partners, subject-matter experts and external stakeholders on complex initiative.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
The following will be considered as assets:
- Experience with consumer protection, marketplace or industry regulation or a related public policy environment.
- Experience leading legislative or regulatory modernization.
- Experience designing large-scale stakeholder consultations or public engagement processes.
- Experience developing public education strategies or digital information resources.
- Knowledge of government decision-making, legislative approval and cross-ministry policy processes.
- Experience using research, environmental scanning and data to identify trends and develop policy options.
