Role Responsibilities
The International Relations Division (IR) is focused on achieving Alberta's international priorities, including advocacy, attracting international talent and labour, promoting trade and export development and attracting investment. The IR Division recognizes the strategic importance of international relations and trade opportunities to Alberta and assumes a leadership role in helping Alberta-based businesses become aware of international opportunities and equipping them to capitalize on those opportunities. The Assistant Deputy Minister's Office (ADMO) is responsible for overseeing the entire IR Division.
As Director, you will report to the Managing Director, Alberta Singapore Office, and be accountable for advancing Alberta’s economic, trade and policy interests in Mainland China. This position is collocated in the Canadian Consulate in Shanghai and the role will oversee the direction and management of Alberta’s China operations in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
You will build and deepen a strategic network of key contacts in China, to facilitate engagement and a flow of timely information to effectively support the Government of Alberta's objectives in the region. Operational management of Alberta’s China offices, development of strategies and market intelligence, and delivery of specific programs that advance Alberta's market access and investment attraction priorities and commercial engagement are all key responsibilities of the position.
Major Accountabilities:
Provide leadership and direction to administrative and professional staff to ensure effective delivery of the AIO program, which includes:
- Plan, develop, lead and execute trade promotion, investment attraction, and advocacy initiatives.
- Hiring and management of locally engaged staff (LES);
- Budget management, oversight and reporting;
- Provide insights and awareness of Alberta to the team members;
- Lead and manage the strategic/operational/individual planning for the office,
- Conduct performance reviews and learning account and training needs of LES
- Establish networks of provincial/federal/sector stakeholders to collaborate, cooperate and share information, contacts, resources and plans.

Qualifications
University graduation in a field related to the position assignment, preferred degree with a focus in Business or Economics, supplemented by eight years progressively responsible experience. Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis. Preferred degree with a focus in International Business or Economics.

- A broad understanding of Alberta’s current economic drivers and priorities, as well as political and social issues.
- Extensive related experience in international economic development and policy advocacy and networking to drive outcomes.
- An understanding of Alberta’s industry and networks and the Alberta value proposition for international trade promotion and investment attraction.
- Demonstrated capacity for building relationships with domestic and international businesses, intergovernmental partners and other key stakeholders.
- Exceptional diplomacy skills in responding and dealing with sensitive and controversial matters and in representing the province at senior political, business and social levels.
- Exposure and knowledge of business management and international business development principles and practices would be considered an asset.
- Proven success in managing complex issues and positively influencing outcomes.
- Exceptional verbal, written, listening and interpersonal communications skills.

The location of the position is based outside of Alberta and Canada. Successful candidates must be Canadian Citizens who must be eligible to work internationally.
Final candidates will be required to undergo Top Secret Federal Security Clearance screening.
