This position resides in the Ministry of Health under the Acute Care Division, within the Quality & Provincial Programs Branch.
Role Responsibilities

The Acute Care Division is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to take on the role of Director, Quality Planning and Performance. This is a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on Alberta’s acute care system through strategic leadership, collaborative innovation, and data-informed decision-making.
The Acute Care Division leads the planning and continuous enhancement of quality acute care services in Alberta. As Director, you will help guide the province in achieving improved access, better outcomes, and a more integrated health system.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership and policy direction for quality planning and performance across Alberta’s acute care and Emergency Health Services (EHS) systems.
- Develop and recommend forward-thinking strategies, policies, and legislative frameworks aligned with ministry and government priorities.
- Lead provincial acute care planning efforts, including setting evidence-based standards, performance measurement, and public reporting (e.g., ED, EMS, and surgical wait times).
- Foster alignment and integration of policies and strategies across the division, ministry, and key partners including Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health, HQCA, AMA, and professional colleges.
- Coordinate and oversee the development and implementation of initiatives to improve patient safety, reduce care variability, and optimize system resources.
- Lead issue management processes to ensure proactive, timely, and comprehensive responses.
- Represent the ministry on cross-ministry and cross-jurisdictional committees, contributing strategic insight and collaboration.
- Engage in stakeholder and relationship management, sustaining networks with internal and external partners to drive health system priorities.
- Collaborate with other divisions and health system partners to align quality, standards, and planning efforts across the continuum of care.
- Support service planning and integrate quality frameworks into new models of care and legislative reviews.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
University graduation in a field related to the position assignment (Public Administration or Healthcare Administration), supplemented by six (6) years progressively responsible experience in Acute Care. Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.
Experience:
- Senior-level leadership experience in health system planning, performance measurement, or quality improvement.
- Proven experience in policy development, legislative frameworks, or strategic health system transformation.
- Experience working with large, complex, multi-stakeholder organizations, preferably in health care (e.g., Alberta Health Services, regulatory bodies, or government ministries).
- Experience in issues management, intergovernmental relations, and collaborative decision-making at the executive level.
Asset:
- Experience working in an acute care setting in a clinical or administrative capacity.

This is a full-time Permanent position working 36.25 hours per week.
Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary. This competition may be used to fill future roles at the same or lower classifications.
