We are dedicated to improving public health outcomes through innovative digital solutions. Our Public Health Information Systems Unit plays a crucial role in managing and modernizing the data systems that drive effective disease surveillance and immunization management. 
 

We are seeking a visionary and strategic leader to join our team as the Director of Public Health Information Systems. In this senior leadership role, you will oversee the operational management and strategic vision of our Communicable Disease and Immunization Information Systems. Your expertise will be essential in integrating and modernizing our public health data systems, ensuring they support accurate and timely responses to public health challenges.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director, Communicable Disease Control Health, the Director, Public Health Information System responsibilities include:
Public Health Information Systems Management

  • Supervise and provide strategic oversight for applications such as Imm/ARI, CDRS, PSI, AVI, PSIR, IDSM, and AVBS.
  • Manage day-to-day operations, addressing workload challenges and setting expectations for the team.
  • Optimize operational processes and governance structures to ensure compliance and efficiency.
     

Strategic Planning & Road Map Development

  • Develop a comprehensive road map for enhancing public health information systems, aligned with relevant legislation.
  • Define system interdependencies and ensure seamless integration to support public health objectives.
  • Lead the development of business cases for system transformation, outlining strategic vision and resource requirements.
     

Regulatory Compliance & Data Coordination

  • Ensure systems meet legislative and regulatory requirements, supporting public health policies.
  • Oversee data coordination with Alberta Health Services (AHS), Alberta Public Laboratory (APL), Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), and other stakeholders.
  • Implement a robust data governance framework to maintain data quality and integrity.
     

Internal Reporting & Efficiency

  • Support accurate and timely internal reporting through effective documentation and process management.
  • Utilize project management skills to drive efficiency, develop project templates, objectives, timelines, and budgets, and oversee projects from inception to execution.
  • Implement continuous improvement practices to enhance system functionality and overall efficiency.
     

Team Leadership & Development

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the Public Health Information Systems team, promoting a high-performance work environment.
  • Identify and support professional development opportunities for team members to enhance their skills and competencies.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirement Standards:
University graduation in Public Health, Epidemiology, Computer Science, Health Informatics, or in a field related to the position assignment, supplemented by seven (7) years progressively responsible experience with a minimum of three year in public health. 
 

Equivalencies maybe considered - directly related education or experience based on:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education. 
     

The following experience is required: 

  • Experience in the development, reviewing, streamlining, and updating of project documents, including vendor integration documents and processes.
  • Knowledge of Public Health concepts and guidelines.
  • Extensive knowledge of project management approaches; project/program planning, development, administration, and operation.
  • Good understanding of contract development and management including the development of Requests for Proposal.
  • Knowledge of organizational leadership and management.
  • Knowledge of political/government structures and decision-making processes. 
     

The following are considered assets: 

  • Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, computer science or health informatics.
  • Experience in immunization and communicable disease information systems.

This is a full-time position working 36.25 hours per week.
