Role Responsibilities

Alberta Justice, Legal Services Division, has one (1) Director position for the legal team supporting Mental Health and Addictions, Hospital and Surgical Health Services, and Primary and Preventative Health Services.

 

About the Team

The team provides a full range of specialized solicitor services on a diverse and complex range of issues relating to Alberta’s health care system, including:

  • the regulation of the delivery of health services in Alberta;
  • regulated health professions;
  • physician compensation;
  • privacy issues involving the Health Information Act and other privacy legislation;
  • public health;
  • mental health and addiction;
  • the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan and all government-sponsored drug and supplementary health benefit programs;
  • audit and compliance reviews of health practitioners’ claims; and
  • grants, procurement and contracting.

 

The responsibilities of the position may include:

  • Providing leadership and direction to a team of Civil Crown Counsel providing legal services to client departments ensuring timely, practical, strategic and exceptional service.
  • Providing leadership in identifying and reviewing emerging legal and policy issues and raising awareness of impact on the operations of client departments, the Legal Services Division and the Government of Alberta.
  • Providing senior legal services and related strategic advice, recommendations, consultation, direction and communication.
  • Providing leadership, advice and direction in a variety of areas to improve the operational effectiveness of the team in meeting the different needs of client departments.
  • Overseeing outside counsel retainers and liasing with outside counsel.
  • Developing and maintaining strategic relationships and alliances to identify opportunities to effectively collaborate on issue resolution and to improve communication and understanding of issues within the Legal Services Division and with client departments.
  • As a member of the Legal Services Division, provide leadership and expert advice and collaboration in the execution of strategies and plans that support the Division's goals and changing priorities.
  • Supporting client department executive teams including attending meetings with members of the executive, as required.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (JD). For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required. You must be an active member or must have immediate eligibility for full membership with the Law Society of Alberta.

 

Civil Crown Counsel - A Minimum of 11+ years legal experience required.

The Hours of Work are 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
