The Ministry of Indigenous Relations is dedicated to advancing stronger relationships between the provincial government and Indigenous communities, organizations and people. One of the Indigenous Women’s Initiatives (IWI) division’s key focus areas is addressing violence and increasing safety and economic security of Indigenous women, girls and two spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual plus (2S+) people through the implementation of the Alberta Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Roadmap. This includes providing secretariat support to the Premier’s Council on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit Plus People, and the First Nations and Métis Women’s Councils on Economic Security. The IWI division also administers the Community Support Fund (CSF) and the Alberta Indigenous Intern Program (AIIP).

Role Responsibilities
The Director, Indigenous Women’s Initiatives (IWI), leads the advancement of ministry priorities related to Alberta’s response to the National Inquiry into MMIWG and the coordination of actions under the Alberta MMIWG Roadmap, including strengthening relationships with Indigenous women and 2S+ organizations to improve social and economic outcomes of Indigenous women, girls and 2S+ people.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Leadership of Indigenous Advisory Councils:
- Lead the provision of secretariat functions for the First Nations and Métis Women’s Councils on Economic Security and the Premier's Council on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit Plus People (MMIWG2S+), ensuring effective planning, coordination and follow up to support council engagement and decision making.
- Provide strategic leadership to the cross‑ministry committee on MMIWG2S+, driving coordinated government action to prevent violence and improve safety and economic security.
- Lead provincial coordination and strategic support for Alberta’s participation in federal‑provincial‑territorial engagement related to MMIWG2S+, including cross-ministry alignment, briefings and follow-through.
- Policy Leadership & Strategic Collaboration:
- Provide senior-level policy advice to support implementation of Alberta’s MMIWG Roadmap and related government priorities.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations, ministries, and other partners to advance social and economic outcomes for Indigenous women, girls, and 2S+ people.
- Ensure alignment between government’s work to address MMIWG2S+ and Alberta’s 10‑Year Strategy to End Gender‑Based Violence (GBV Strategy).
- Represent Indigenous Relations on cross‑government committees, contributing to policy, program, and funding alignment related to gender‑based violence prevention and response.
- Support cross‑government monitoring, reporting, and performance measurement related to ministry and GBV initiatives.
- Program Oversight & Grant Administration:
- Oversee administration of the Community Support Fund and other grants, ensuring alignment with provincial priorities, strong accountability, risk management, and performance reporting.
- Lead the coordination and implementation of the Alberta Indigenous Intern Program (AIIP), including recruitment, professional development, community partnerships, and program improvements.
- Division Leadership & Corporate Responsibilities:
- Support divisional planning by recommending and implementing strategic direction, outcomes, and priorities aligned with the ministry’s Business Plan.
- Foster a collaborative, high‑performing work environment through coaching, mentoring, performance management, and effective communication.
- Oversee financial and human resource management, including FTE planning and recruitment.
- Provide strategic advice to the Minister, Deputy Minister, and Executive Director on emerging issues, risks, and opportunities affecting Indigenous women, girls, and 2S+ people.

Qualifications
University graduation in a field related to the position assignment (Indigenous Studies, Public Administration, Social Work, Law, Political Science, or a related degree), supplemented by seven years related experience.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Required:
• 5+ Years of experience in leading teams and/or cross-functional initiatives in a complex environment
• Experience providing strategic advice and analysis to support policy and program development to support organizational priorities
• Experience supporting executive leadership (e.g. Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Executive Directors, Councils, etc.) through briefings, issues management and strategic advice
Assets:
• Knowledge of Indigenous histories, cultures, contemporary realities, and governance, and experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations.
• Experience leading cross-ministry or multi-partner initiatives
• Experience administering grants and contracts, including accountability, reporting and evaluation
• Experience in budgeting & forecasting
