About Us

The mandate of Elections Alberta is to administer open, fair and impartial elections by providing stakeholders with the necessary information and means to participate in the democratic process. We also provide support to election officials to ensure impartial service delivery and serve in an advisory and regulatory role to achieve compliance in electoral finance activities.

 

Elections Alberta is a non-partisan office of the Legislative Assembly.

Role

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, this position is responsible for the operations and logistics of electoral activities. These include an election, by-election, enumeration, or plebiscite held under the Election Act, a senate election held under the Alberta Senate Election Act, a referendum held under the Referendum Act, a recall vote held under the Recall Act, or an initiative vote held under the Citizen Initiative Act.

 

The primary focus of this role is on planning, coordinating, managing, and directing election operations in support of stakeholders and in compliance with electoral legislation. This includes:

  • Directing the activities of the election operations unit to ensure that appropriate priorities, decisions and actions are taken according to operational imperatives and time sensitivity.
  • Hiring, training, and overseeing the work of 10 returning officer liaisons and 87 returning officers across the province, ensuring they perform their duties in accordance with legislative requirements and internal policies and procedures.
  • Directing public engagement activities ensuring chosen strategies are conducted in accordance with Election Alberta’s vision, mission, and mandate.
  • Reviews and assesses electoral events, best practices and emerging technology and processes to continually improve election processes.

Qualifications

Required

  • A post-secondary degree in a related field and a minimum of 7 years related experience in a progressively responsible management position that includes leading, facilitating, planning, developing and implementing complex initiatives, policies and projects is required.
  • Experience in electoral operations or managing large events.
  • Experience in implementing complex legislation.

 

Preferred

  • In-depth knowledge of election management and election operations.
  • Previous leadership and supervisory experience within government.
  • Demonstrated experience working with stakeholders.
  • Extensive knowledge of the legislation (Election Act, Alberta Senate Election Act, Referendum Act, Recall Act, Citizen Initiative Act, Local Authorities Election Act, Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act)

Salary

$4,037.95 to $5,127.61 bi-weekly

Notes

This position is exempt from the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE). Final Candidates will be required to undergo a Criminal Record Check. This competition may be used to fill future vacancies.
