Executive Council supports the Premier and Cabinet to ensure outcomes are achieved by supporting strategic planning, coordinated policy development, and informed decision-making for ministries as they implement the government’s agenda.

Intergovernmental Relations (IGR) works with other ministries across the Government of Alberta to develop collaborative approaches and expand multilateral and bilateral partnerships. IGR also supports the Premier and ministers at intergovernmental forums and reviews all intergovernmental agreements.

 

Role Responsibilities

As the Director, Economic & Resource policy you will:

 

  • Support the Ministry’s core business of intergovernmental relations by providing strategic advice and related issues management and policy analysis, analyzing and disseminating information, coordinating Alberta’s policies and activities, and advancing Alberta’s interests (as outlined in the Government of Alberta and Ministry Business Plans).
     
  • Monitor political, program and service developments in economic and resource policy, and report to the Executive Director of Economic and Resource Policy. With your management skills, you will directly supervise two Associate Directors, and indirectly supervise two Senior Intergovernmental Officers and one Intergovernmental Officer.
     
  • Identify emerging issues and analyze the implications for Alberta’s overall strategic direction to ensure interdepartmental and intergovernmental coordination; be able to provide advice on policy and strategy; represent the Alberta Intergovernmental Relations Division in intergovernmental meetings; and participate in the negotiation of intergovernmental agreements to ensure Alberta’s intergovernmental interests are represented. Your role includes working effectively with senior level officials from within the Government of Alberta as well as from other governments.


Strong interpersonal skills, including diplomacy and cooperation, and the ability to maintain close liaison with contacts will be requisite. Your attention to detail, organizational skills, flexibility in dealing with multiple requests, ability to work under tight timelines, and excellent project management skills are also essential for succeeding in this position. The successful candidate must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications

University graduation in Political Science, Economics, Canadian Studies or related discipline, supplemented by six years of progressively responsible experience.

Equivalencies:
 

  • Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

  • Thorough understanding of the federal and provincial systems of government and a strong background in public policy
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience providing strategic policy options and advice
  • Strong interpersonal skills

Hours of work:
