The Office of the Controller is responsible for government accounting policies and financial reporting, financial management and control policies, risk management (financial and audit risk) and financial business process management. The division is a leader in sponsoring, supporting, and facilitating initiatives with outcomes focused on effectiveness, efficiency, best practice, and continual improvement by the government financial community.
 

The Corporate Consolidations and Reporting (CCR) group is responsible for the preparation of government accountability reports such as government's consolidated financial statements, MLA Report, Blue Book Report and Grant Disclosure. Additionally, the team provides support and advice to ministries on government financial reporting, manages the master data elements and strives for GoA financial system and business process improvements.

Role Responsibilities

As a key leader within the Corporate Consolidation and Reporting team in the Office of the Controller, you will be responsible for overseeing critical projects that impact GoA financial reporting, operation and business processes.
 

Reporting to the Executive Director, you will guide GoA-wide initiatives, providing strategic advice on system enhancements, automation, and the integration of new reporting standards. Your role will be central to maintaining the integrity and accuracy of financial data, while advising executive leadership on how to optimize processes in accordance with public sector accounting standards, government policies, and legislative requirements.
 

In this dynamic role, you will lead the delivery of finance system projects that impact financial consolidation, reporting and accountability reports across the GoA finance community. You will collaborate with diverse stakeholders, from TBF divisions and ministry teams to external partners team—to develop strategic project objectives and implement robust project plans.
 

Your responsibilities include establishing internal control processes to ensure deliverables meet the timelines and high standards required by the GoA finance community, developing and updating process documentation, and devising effective communication and training strategies to support change management.
 

You will provide advice on maintaining and enhancing the 1GX system, ensuring it adheres to public sector accounting standards and GoA policies while seeking opportunities for improvement. This involves guiding your team in troubleshooting system issues, automating financial reporting processes, and developing new system reports and master data applications. You will play a hands-on role in the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial reporting cycles and support the resolution of reporting issues that affect accountability and decision-making at the highest levels. Additionally, you will foster a collaborative environment by supporting professional development, creating a culture of continuous improvement, and building trusted relationships with internal and external partners.

Qualifications

  • A professional accounting designation – Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA).
  • University graduation in accounting, finance, business, or a related discipline complemented by at least six years of relevant experience; or equivalent as described below.
     

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
     
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and SAP financial system.
     

The following are considered asset:
 

  • Leadership experience in driving consensus among diverse working groups.
  • Demonstrate exceptional writing, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Exhibit proven project management capabilities with the ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Notes

This is a permanent, full-time position working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
 

Currently, the Government of Alberta offers a hybrid work schedule that employees can choose to work from home for two days per week. Employees working from home must be working from an Alberta location.
 

This position will be located in the Terrace Building in Edmonton.
 

Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary. This competition may be used to fill future roles at the same or lower classifications.
