Role Responsibilities
The Director, Audit & Compliance Assurance, provides strategic leadership for Alberta’s audit, compliance, and risk-management functions within the Primary and Preventative Health Services (PPHS) Ministry. The role exists to strengthen confidence in the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan by ensuring effective monitoring, detection, and prevention of non-compliance across the health system. As the senior leader, the Director of Audit & Compliance Assurance, sets strategic direction, oversees audit methodologies, and ensures alignment with legislation, ministry priorities, and professional standards.
The position leads the development of audit and compliance strategies, including risk-based planning, analytics, and monitoring frameworks. It guides the design and implementation of processes that assess compliance with the Alberta Health Care Insurance Act and related legislation. The Director of Audit & Compliance Assurance provides authoritative advice to executive leadership, influences policy and legislative decisions, and ensures significant risks are identified, quantified, and addressed.
The successful candidate is expected to build an integrated compliance framework across PPHS, coordinate health service and compensation related audits , lead continuous improvement initiatives and ensure that audit processes are well-documented and consistent. The role requires extensive collaboration with internal and external stakeholders and will represent the ministry on cross-government committees. The position also provides leadership and mentoring, fostering a team with expertise in audit, analytics, and risk management.

Qualifications
University graduation in a related field (Business, Information Technology, Securities, and/or Audit Designation), supplemented by seven years related experience.
Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.
Assets:
• Graduate level degree in Business, Information Technology, Securities, and/or Audit Designation
• Public sector experience in risk management and/or internal auditing, or finance and/or business planning
• Working knowledge of the PPHS Ministry, which includes understanding the governance and political dynamics within the provincial health system
• Knowledge of the policy development process within the ministry and GOA.
• Knowledge of the AHCIA and supporting legislation
• Knowledge of the Financial Administrations Act, POPA, Health Information Act, and Government Accountability Act
• Direct experience in senior leadership and team management
Preferred Skills:
• Strong planning, analytical thinking, and problem solving skills scalable to immediate detailed scenarios and/or longer term broader issues
• Self-directed and initiates ideas and work deliverables in anticipation of new business requirements
• Demonstrated abilities in knowledge management, team building, mentoring, and facilitation
