The Digital Design and Delivery (DDD) division within the Ministry of Technology and Innovation (TI) leads the development of the next generation of digital public services for the GoA. DDD partners with other departments to deliver products, platforms and services that are better, faster, and easier, through modern user-centered agile processes. The Software Delivery Branch supports and enables product and platform teams by providing access to underlying infrastructure such as AI enabled solutions, cloud services, common tooling and patterns, and capability in architecture. This Branch also leads the evolution of the technology practice around digital service delivery including the expansion of DevOps, and the delivery of modern architecture support.

Role Responsibilities

The Software Delivery Branch is seeking a Senior DevOps Specialist to support the design and operation of hybrid cloud infrastructure, with a strong focus on OpenShift platform engineering. Reporting to the Manager, CloudOps, this role is responsible for container platform operations across on-prem and Azure environments, ensuring platforms are secure, reliable, and scalable for critical government services.

The position works closely with Product and Platform Teams to enable consistent, automated, and production-ready infrastructure, and provides subject-matter expertise on container platform operations and DevOps best practices.


The responsibilities of this role include:

  • Support the lifecycle management of OpenShift clusters (on-prem and Azure Red Hat OpenShift), including provisioning, upgrades, scaling, and capacity management.
  • Build and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation tooling to enable standardized, secure, and repeatable deployments across on-prem and Azure environments.
  • Contribute to platform reliability through monitoring, alerting, incident response, and troubleshooting of cluster health and performance issues.
  • Support release orchestration and deployment workflows using enterprise build and release tooling (e.g., GitHub Actions), including environment configuration and operational consistency.
  • Implement security best practices for container platforms, including identity and access management, secrets management, and compliance with enterprise standards.
  • Contribute to backup, disaster recovery, and high availability strategies for container platforms and supporting infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with Product and Platform teams to diagnose platform issues, promote DevOps and platform engineering best practices, and mentor team members on container operations.

  • Sound judgment and composure when troubleshooting production issues under time pressure.
  • A bias toward automation, repeatability, and documenting operational practices.
  • Practical use of AI tools and AI agents to improve productivity, troubleshooting, and operational automation.
  • Ability to coach and mentor others on platform engineering and DevOps practices.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • A university degree in a related field (e.g., Computer Science, Information Technology), supplemented by four (4) years of progressively responsible, related experience in cloud, hybrid cloud, and platform operations.
  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated hands-on experience operating Red Hat OpenShift in production environments, including cluster lifecycle management, upgrades, and operational troubleshooting, incident management.
  • 5+ years of experience with Azure Red Hat OpenShift (ARO) or other managed Kubernetes platforms in hybrid cloud environments (on-prem and public cloud).
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and platform automation tools such as Argo, Terraform, ARM templates, Ansible, or Helm, supporting standardized deployments on Microsoft Azure or comparable public cloud platforms.
  • Working knowledge of container platform networking (ingress, DNS, load balancing) and implementation of security best practices including access control and secrets management.
  • Experience with deployment automation platforms, including maintaining deployment workflows, managing environment configurations, and supporting release orchestration in enterprise environments.
  • Hands on experience with AI tools and AI agents to improve productivity, troubleshooting, and operational automation.

 

Equivalencies:

  • A related master’s degree and a minimum of two (2) years of related experience; or
  • A related two-year diploma and a minimum of six (6) years of related experience; or
  • A related one-year certificate and a minimum of seven (7) years of related experience.

 

Assets:

  • Knowledge of OpenShift Virtualization (OCP-V), including running and managing virtual machine workloads on OpenShift clusters.
  • Experience working within the Government of Alberta or other Canadian public sector environments.
  • Familiarity with cloud governance, security, and compliance practices in regulated environments.
  • Hands on Experience with AI-enabled workloads and model inference in an operational context.
