Role Responsibilities
If you have a strong hands-on civil aptitude and are interested in contributing to water management in the province, then we have an opportunity for you as a Dam Safety Technologist!
As a member of the Dam Safety Team, the Dam Safety Technologist contributes to the delivery and stewardship of the dam and canal safety regulatory program through effective implementation of the Dam and Canal Safety Regulatory Framework.
Reporting to the Senior Dam Safety Engineer, this position operates within government policies and procedures, industry best practices, and compliance assurance principles, in support of Department goals. The position also provides technical support to implement the Department's Dam Safety Management Program for Department owned water management infrastructure.
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Foster collaboration with regulated parties, professionals, and the public to support compliance, promote dam and canal safety, and enhance public trust.
- Document, track, and report regulatory activities using EIMS and DRAS systems.
- Assist in developing the Dam Safety Operational Plan and contribute to annual program reporting.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the Dam and Canal Safety Framework and industry best practices.
- Provide technical support to Dam Safety Engineers and the designated Director under the Water Act.
- Support emergency management planning and response for dams and canals.
- Utilize tools such as computer-assisted drafting and ArcGIS Pro for project support.
- Participate in the Branch dam safety management committee and collect instrumentation readings as needed.
As the ideal candidate for the Dam Safety Technologist position, you will possess:
- Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, or equivalent.
- 4 years relevant technical experience related to water management infrastructure (dams and canals) .
- Membership with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET), or be eligible for membership.
- Strong ability to work independently and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Knowledge and experience in geotechnical instrumentation, hydrology, hydraulics, and dam/canal safety assessments.
- Familiarity with emergency management planning and dam safety best practices.
- Proficiency in computer-aided drafting, mapping, surveying, database management, and user interface tools.

Qualifications
Minimum Recruitment Standard for Technologies 5 classification:
Two-year technical diploma in a related field plus four years related experience; or equivalent as described below.
Equivalency:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or,
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Example:
A relevant diploma combined with four years of related experience, or a relevant degree combined with two years of related experience, would meet the equivalency criteria.
Related diplomas or degrees including but not limited to the following fields will be considered:
- Civil Engineering Technology (CET)
- Water Resources Management
Assets will be considered as follows:
- Experience with Canary Systems, DRAS, and EIMS.
- Understanding of Alberta OH&S legislation, Water Act, Water (Ministerial) Regulation, Alberta Dam and Canal Safety Directive, and dam safety management best practices, and the Canadian Dam Association guidelines.
- Knowledge of policy development and compliance assurance frameworks is considered.

This position works a 36.25-hour week, Monday to Friday. Evening and weekend work is sometimes required.
Travel within Alberta will be necessary, therefore a valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required.

About Your Work Environment: You will be working primarily in an office setting located in Edmonton. However some to travel to field sites located throughout Alberta will require occasional overtime and overnight stays. Performing duties on a rotating 24/7 basis during flood or other emergency events may be required.
