Role Responsibilities

The Training Academy (TA) is offering an exciting opportunity to apply your experience and expertise in the design and development of high‑quality training materials aligned with TA priorities and adult learning principles.

 

The Curriculum Designer plays a key role in developing evidence-based training products grounded in current best practice that support the evolving needs of stakeholders. This position provides expert guidance on training needs, instructional design, and delivery methods while also leading the creation, writing, and production of curriculum materials.

 

Duties and responsibilities include but not limited to are:

 

  • Design learning and develop curriculum for recruit and in-service training as well as professional development programs for staff that complies with adult learning principles.
  • Conduct analysis to assess jobs and tasks, existing knowledge and performance, determine requirements of training needs.
  • Identify and apply effective development strategies, tools, and delivery methods that support the design and development of high‑quality training products.
  • Work closely with Subject Matter Resources (SMRs) to ensure curriculum content is validated and produces the final curriculum deliverables.
  • Conduct research on current learning standards, tools, and best practices to maintain up‑to‑date knowledge and apply relevant findings appropriately in curriculum deliverables.
  • Support innovative process improvements by providing educational and learning design perspectives that inform the selection, enhancement, and effective use of learning technologies and platforms.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships, partnerships, and networks that support curriculum life cycle, identify best practices to support consistency and efficiency in training program delivery practices.
  • Manage assigned projects using established project‑management practices and ensure the completion of required deliverables.
  • Provide advice and recommendations to Manager on the development of policies, procedures and business processes related to training program development and implementation.

  • Direct experience in curriculum design and development for adult learners
  • Effective leadership demonstrated through sound judgment, professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to excellence
  • Ability to work effectively with evolving information and priorities, take appropriate initiative within established direction, and contribute to team and organizational objectives through collaborative problem‑solving
  • Ability to meet deadlines and deliverables, manage multiple projects simultaneously (e.g. project management) and drive results
  • Direct instructor or facilitator experience in adult training initiatives
  • Strong relationship‑building skills including the ability to work with diverse stakeholder perspectives
  • Creative and analytical agility in assessing stakeholder needs to develop effective training solutions
  • Effective communication both orally and in writing, including sound documentation practice

Qualifications

Required:

  • A university degree in a related field such as education, social work, leadership, psychology, etc. and a minimum of 2 years of experience in developing and implementing adult based curriculum is required.
  • Demonstrated project experience is required.

 

Equivalencies will be considered: 
A related two-year diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution and four years related experience; or a related one-year certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution and five years related experience.

Assets and preferences:

  • Demonstrated experience in producing challenging deliverables involving multiple stakeholders, in tight timeline.
  • Experience in designing and implementing adult-focused training programs.
  • Facilitation of adult learning experiences is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Training Academy's mandate/role.
  • Preference will be given to those with experience working with vulnerable populations, as curriculum is developed to assist Peace Officers in working with incarcerated individuals/vulnerable Albertans.
  • At least one year of this experience must be specific to curriculum design and adult learning.

There are one full time temporary positions for the period of 2 years located in Edmonton.
