The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) prosecutes persons charged with Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statute offences. The ACPS promotes safe communities by vigorously prosecuting cases involving serious and violent crime and working with individuals and organizations in the community to identify and implement improved and alternative approaches to the administration of criminal justice.

Role Responsibilities

Are you currently providing exceptional legal services that ensure fair and equitable justice?

As a Crown Prosecutor with the Advanced Projects and Traffic Office (APTO), you will support the fair, consistent, and effective delivery of justice through principled prosecution and sound legal judgment. This role combines hands‑on litigation with leadership, training, and policy support within a specialized provincial office.

You will contribute to the development and consistency of Alberta’s regulatory prosecution practices, while supporting prosecutors across the province through mentorship, supervision, and training.

As a Crown Prosecutor within APTO, you will balance litigation responsibilities with people leadership and operational oversight, including:

Litigation and Legal Work

  • Defend Charter applications commonly arising in regulatory and traffic-related prosecutions.
  • Conduct select summary conviction appeals, including appeals focused on clarification and consistent application of the law.
  • Provide litigation support and legal guidance to prosecutors.
  • Assist in identifying recurring legal issues and contributing to consistent prosecution positions.

 

Supervision and Management

  • Supervise and support Provincial Prosecutors, ensuring high-quality prosecution services.
  • Ensure adherence to applicable legislation, regulations, and ACPS Guidelines, Protocols, and Policies.
  • Provide guidance on file management, courtroom conduct, resolution practices, and professional obligations.
  • Support performance excellence through performance planning and goal-setting; performance reviews and feedback; and performance management and professional growth.

 

Training, Mentorship, and Development

  • Participate in the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and training of prosecutors.
  • Develop and deliver training on regulatory prosecution practices.
  • Mentor prosecutors at varying stages of their careers, fostering confidence, consistency, and sound judgment.
  • Promote a culture of professionalism, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

 

Policy and Program Support

  • Work closely with the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor to support initiatives aimed at modernizing and strengthening Alberta’s regulatory enforcement framework.
  • Assist with policy development, legal analysis, and operational projects impacting prosecution services.
  • Contribute to initiatives focused on consistency, efficiency, and public confidence in the justice system.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD), and active membership or immediate eligibility for membership with the Law Society of Alberta is required. A minimum of 4 years experience after call to bar.

Crown Prosecutor 2: A minimum of 4 years’ legal experience is required.

Crown Prosecutor 3: A minimum of 11 years legal experience is required.

Assets:

  • Strong litigation experience, preferably in the area of criminal law.
  • Experience in litigation charter and conviction appeals


For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required.
