Role Responsibilities

The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) has an opportunity for an innovative and energetic Prosecutor to join the Economics Crime Unit in the Specialized Prosecutions Office in Calgary, Alberta. 

The Economic Crimes Unit handles Economic Crimes (EC) consisting of complex and sophisticated multi-jurisdictional and transnational fraudulent schemes that result in significant financial losses to individuals, corporations, and various levels of government. The approach to prosecuting these matters is equally as complex and sophisticated. 

Specialized Prosecutions is looking for a Crown Prosecutor with exceptional litigation skills and a passion for complex and challenging criminal cases. Reporting to the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor of Specialized Prosecutions in Calgary, you will appear for the prosecution at all levels of court and will prosecute a variety of cases involving complex corporate fraud, securities fraud, mass-marketing fraud, large employee defalcations, and corruption with province-wide, inter-provincial, and international implications. These cases are both sensitive and protracted in nature. You will need a strong knowledge of lawful access issues and will provide extensive advice and counsel to the police at the pre-charge stage.

This position will include prosecution of typically business-related regulatory offences as well as the regular EC crime. This position contemplates prosecution of “business related” regulatory offences. This would include prosecutions related to offences under the AGLC, Scrap Metal Dealers, Privacy Act and other offences where the pattern of behaviour may be described as organized illegal behaviour contravening a regulatory Act.

• The public interest is served, and a just result is obtained
• The Court is provided with evidence and legal argument that is fair, accurate and complete
• Assigned prosecutions of all serious and complex cases are conducted in a highly competent manner
• Working with victims of crimes and their families.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD), and active membership or immediate eligibility for membership with the Law Society of Alberta is required.

• Crown Prosecutor 2: a minimum of 4 years legal experience is required.
• Crown Prosecutor 3: a minimum of 11 years legal experience is required.
• Crown Prosecutor 4: a minimum of 15+ years legal experience is required

Prosecution experience in criminal law is required. 

For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required.

A valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License is a requirement. Travel within the province is required.

There is a Temporary position available, and this Job Ad will be used to fill future vacancies and is located in Calgary.

The Hours of Work are 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Travel within Alberta to circuit court locations is a requirement for this role.
