Role Responsibilities


We are seeking a detail-oriented Court-Ordered Interpreter Coordinator to manage the scheduling and oversight of interpreters in legal proceedings. This pivotal role ensures that all individuals receive fair and accurate representation in compliance with court mandates.

As a Court Ordered Interpreter co ordinator, you are a paralegal professional that supports the work of the Judiciary, court administration, counsel, and the public in the Alberta Justice system before, during and after court proceedings.
 
You will hold a key responsibility for arranging and managing all court ordered interpreters, for the three levels of court within Alberta: Court of Appeal, Court of Queen’s Bench and Provincial Court, in Edmonton and Calgary, pursuant to the Fees and Expenses for Witnesses and Interpreters Regulation AR123/1984. You will be a senior representative of Alberta Justice and represents the administrations of courts in a responsible and professional manner, which reflects the fair and equitable delivery of justice in Alberta.
 
Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Performs court-ordered interpreter scheduling responsibilities for multiple court offices in Edmonton and Calgary – Court of Appeal, Court of Queen’s Bench and provincial Court.
  • Develops and implements procedures for coordinating interpreter resources including maintaining the interpreter application form, reviewing, and approving applications to become court interpreter, maintaining a directory of qualified interpreters; monitoring requests for interpreting services; handling complaints both from and about interpreters.
  • Consults with court offices for scheduling and cancellation of court-ordered interpreters.
  • Regular monitors all court ordered interpreter requests received from court offices, ensuring timely delivery service.
  • Works with judiciary, executive and senior management to determine program performance measures.
  • Participates in, and supports the development of, a Court Interpreter Program System to be used by staff for scheduling and booking interpreters and maintaining interpreter qualification and experience information.
  • Develops, maintains and enhances program/service tracking systems that gather qualitative and quantitative data, e.g., languages most frequently used, locations were used most frequently, complaints received.
  • Working with the Court Manager, locates interpreters from other jurisdictions when there is no qualified interpreter available in the assigned court location and oversees their placement.

 
The ideal candidate will:

  • Extensive knowledge of relevant regulations, manual and policy directives is required.
  • Well-developed inter-personal skills, with an emphasis on oral capabilities are required to manage the internal and external clients.
  • Initiative is required to alert the judiciary and court management when challenges arise in engaging qualified court-ordered interpreters.
  • Ability to work with highly confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Possess strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in the absence of Court Managers/Director.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Two-Year Diploma in related field; Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Law, Para legal, etc., plus two years of progressively related experience. 

 

Equivalency: Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of:

  • one year of experience for one year of education.
  • one year of education for one year of experience. 
     

Assets & Preferences will be considered as follows:

  • Related post-secondary education will be considered an asset such as a Legal Assistant Diploma, Paralegal Certificate. 
  • Experience with JOIN, CASES, FTR, M365, Outlook and/or 1GX will be considered an asset. 
  • Experience with accounting and/or finance is considered an asset. 
  • Supervisory/management experience in an office setting is preferred.

Notes

  • Work Hours are 36.25 per week, Monday to Friday.
  • This is one full time permanent position, and one temporary (1 year) position located in Edmonton.
  • Overtime is often required with little or no notice as courts may run late, you need to be able to provide support.
  • Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening.
