The Compliance Advisor position is part of the Policing Standards and Audits Section (PSAS) within the Law Enforcement and Oversight Branch. PSAS is responsible for managing Alberta’s Policing Standards and supporting oversight and accountability across law enforcement and peace officer programs.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Peace Officer Program Manager, the Compliance Advisor provides advisory, monitoring, and assessment services to support compliance with legislation, standards, and policy requirements related to policing and oversight.

Key Day to Day Responsibilities:

•    Provide compliance advice and guidance related to Alberta’s Policing Standards, legislation, regulations, and ministry policies.
•    Conduct compliance reviews, assessments, and audits of policing and peace officer programs.
•    Interpret legislative, regulatory, and policy requirements and communicate compliance expectations to stakeholders.
•    Identify compliance risks, gaps, and trends, and develop recommendations to address non compliance.
•    Support oversight activities, including audits, inspections, investigations, and follow up reviews.
•    Monitor and track compliance issues, corrective actions, and outcomes.
•    Prepare briefing notes, reports, and correspondence for management and oversight purposes.
•    Collaborate with internal teams, law enforcement agencies, and external partners to promote consistent application of policing standards.
•    Contribute to the continuous improvement of compliance, oversight, and accountability frameworks.

The successful candidate must have strong written and verbal communication skills to clearly present complex audit findings and research results. This role requires solid planning and organizational skills, the ability to manage individual workloads, and experience working collaboratively in a team environment. Knowledge or experience in policing, police oversight, auditing, or provincial government, will support the Ministry in assessing compliance with Provincial Policing Standards and the effectiveness of policing services.

Qualifications

A university degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Law Enforcement, Police Studies or any other related field, plus a minimum of four (4) years of experience investigations in a law enforcement or regulatory environment is required.

Equivalency:

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Requirements of this position include:

•    Valid Alberta driver's license (Class 5)

Assets include:

•    Experience working within provincial, municipal, or other public‑sector environments.
•    Ability to prepare audit reports, briefing notes, or formal written findings.
•    Experience engaging with multiple stakeholders, including regulated entities or community partners.
•    Familiarity with Alberta’s Policing Standards or similar regulatory frameworks.

Notes

There is one full time temporary (1 year) position available, working Monday-Friday from 8:15am-4:30pm, fully in-person.

•    Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening.
