Role Responsibilities

Do you have a vision of building strong communities where children and youth are valued, nurtured, and cared for?

We have an exciting opportunity to enhance your skills and experience working with youth between ages 12-17 years who face a variety of significant emotional and behavioral challenges due to concerns of trauma, adverse childhood experiences, mental health, addictions and/or developmental disabilities.

To be successful in this position, you must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, trauma-informed practice in a campus based setting, ability to apply theoretical knowledge of child and youth care practices, observation skills, supervision, and communication skills as well as the ability to adapt to complex and ever-changing environments.

Working collaboratively as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary youth care team, where no two days are the same, you will be responsible for:

 

  • Participating in all aspects of individual campus based care planning.
  • Monitoring and recording behaviors and outcome progress.
  • Overseeing and arranging daily youth care plan activities; and
  • Supporting youth to be successful/working towards well-being.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standards

 

  • Related Diploma or Degree; no experience required
  • Note: If you hold a Bachelors or Masters degree in Social Work, you will be required to be registered through Alberta college of Social Workers (ACSW)

 
Related Education

 

Either a Diploma or a degree in;

 

  • Human Service Worker,
  • Social Work,
  • Criminology,
  • Criminal Justice,
  • Correctional Services,
  • Police Services,
  • Psychology,
  • Sociology,
  • Education.

 

Note: There are no equivalencies for Child and Youth care Worker 1 (CYC1). Candidates must possess, at minimum, a diploma in one of the previously listed educational areas.

 

Assets

 

  • A high cultural competency in Indigenous experience and how they impact approaches for youth
  • Child and Youth Care Degree or Diploma
  • Related experience in therapeutic campus-based care setting, working with indigenous populations, working in youth homes, teacher, educational assistant, crisis intervention, family counselling, youth counselling, youth correction work, childcare program development (Teacher, Educational Assistant, Psychologist) and behavioral therapy.
  • Current Certification in First Aid with CPR and Suicide Intervention
  • Trauma informed and relevant best practices in campus based or residential settings
  • Child/Adolescent development theories including social learning, moral development, cognitive development, attachment, resiliency, strengths based competency models, change Models
  • Principles in Behavior management and De-escalation techniques, Relational practices, Systems theory, Ecological approaches
  • Developmental, Trauma related and Mental Health disorders and disabilities affecting youth such as FASD, ODD, OCD, depression, eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, pervasive personality, suicidal ideation, Autism and substance addictions.
  • Related acts including the Child Youth and Family Enhancement Act (CYFE) and Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act (PSECA)
  • Issues related to youth development such as Self Esteem, Gender Diversity, Identity Crisis/Confusion, Peer Pressure, Bullying
  • Appropriate legislation and policy such as CYFEA handbook, Accreditation Standards, Regional policy and procedures, PSECA protocol for police services, Public Health Act
  • Assessment tools and program planning, Community resources, Safety and security measures
  • Familiarity with Mental Health Act, School Act, Freedom of information and Privacy Act (FOIP), Young Offenders Protocol (Youth Criminal Justice Act), OHSA
