Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Contaminated Sites and Remediation, the CS communications coordinator supports the delivery of a province-wide Contaminated Sites and Remediation program.
1. Foundation Education Material Development
Activities:
- Develop clear and concise information products highlighting regulatory requirements for contamination management for internal and external audiences including government use, release (contamination) owners, consultants, and the public. Information products include internal guides, external guides, frequently asked question responses, knowledge articles, presentations, and educational and web-based tools.
- Work with internal subject matter experts to determine content and context to develop required documents.
- Coordinate final production of materials with the contamination management team and work with communications for any external release of information.
2. Program Management
Activities:
- Identify knowledge gaps for contamination owners, consultants and industry, as well as documentation gaps within the program.
- Develop and annually update a program framework. The framework establishes program need, program outcomes, priorities for outreach activities and priority for communication deliverables.
- Consult with external associations and stakeholders to identify priority educational outcomes and activities.
- Conduct needs assessment to determine target audience, availability of support materials and which media would be most suitable for each topic area/program.
- Identify and foster environmental education partnerships.
- May work with consultants, service providers, and staff team members in the development of departmental environmental outreach materials.
3. Capacity Building
Activities:
- Design and support the delivery of educational workshops and presentations to contamination owners and consultants.
- Enhance the skills, knowledge and technical know-how of staff, professionals and organizations through clear and concise interpretation of regulatory and policy direction.
- Provide support in the design and evaluation of educational initiatives.
- Provide internal staff with tools and documentation to consistently deliver on the program expectations.
- Pursue partnerships that expand direct delivery of capacity building programs.
- Provide continuous improvement assessment.
- Recommend communication strategies and platforms that are relevant to modern communication norms.
4. Outreach
Activities:
- Build interest in the contamination program and increase engagement in regulatory activities both inside and outside of government.
- Support and answer general questions about the department and the contamination management, policy and guideline interpretation, remediation certificates, and contaminated sites designation process.
- Pursue partnerships that expand direct delivery of outreach programs and information resources.
- Attend meetings with association committees and partner organizations to gather information on knowledge and application gaps as related to contamination management.

5. Information Management
Activities:
- Ensures that produced documents align with GoA standards for communication and style guides.
- Provide updated content for the Information Centre and Alberta Environment and Protected Area websites.
- Ensure knowledge articles are updated and maintained through the digital regulatory assurance system.
- Maintain appropriate file storage systems for working and final copies of guides, process documents and educational materials.
Skills
Problem Solving:
- Determining gaps in communication in Department policies and regulations that do not give clear guidance on what is expected in regulatory guidance.
- Help resolve confusion or misunderstandings from stakeholders by creating educational material to explain the requirements to all stakeholders.
- Determining how to most effectively communicate concepts and ideas to varying stakeholders, including the public, municipalities, developers’ landowners, contamination owners, and internal staff.
- Ensuring feedback is documented and available from review and consideration.
- Maintaining documents in an accessible location and usable format.
- Ensuring high quality accuracy and readability of external documents produced.
Relationships:
- All industry involved in soil and groundwater contamination, excluding activities regulated by the AER, for the purpose of learning gaps and needs to understand regulatory expectations and to develop guidance and communications for the purpose of describing those regulatory expectations.
- Public impacted by contaminated sites for the purpose of determining gaps in understanding of regulatory frameworks and developing guidance or information packages.
- Municipalities, developers and landowners affected by soil and groundwater contamination for the purpose of learning gaps and needs to understand regulatory expectations and to develop guidance and communications for the purpose of describing those regulatory expectations.

Qualifications
Diploma (2 year) focusing on communication, adult education or technical writing.
The candidate would be expected to have training in communication and technical writing, as well as 3 years of experience in a communications or writing environment. Final recruitment standards to be finalized after classification is confirmed, but equivalencies would be considered.

The standard hours for this position are 36.25/week.
