The Strategy, Support & Integrated Initiatives (SSII) division provides strategic and integrated support for Justice services and ministerial priority initiatives. The Modernization, IMT and Research (MIR) branch of SSII provides rigorous, high-quality data, research, and evaluation services to support evidence-based decision making within the justice system. The branch reports data for business operations, assesses the effectiveness, efficiency, and implications of programs and services, links data systems, transforms data into insights, and generates new knowledge and data to drive outcomes in the justice system. The work of the branch significantly contributes to the Government of Alberta's commitment to public accountability and transparency.
Under the MIR branch, the Reporting, Research and Evaluation (RRE) unit encompasses an extensive range of Bl services such as operational and strategic reporting, research, evaluation, performance measurement, statistical analysis, ad hoc information delivered through a variety of Bl data products, as well as projects that support the development of Bl systems.
Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Business & Strategic Reporting within the Modernization, IMT & Research branch, the Business Reporting Analyst is responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and supporting data products and solutions to meet departmental decision-making needs.
You will design and develop reporting and analytical products using data visualization and statistical analysis techniques to support operational and strategic decision-making. You will also contribute to the development and enhancement of business intelligence systems using your knowledge of data warehousing and business analysis concepts.
This role includes a research and analytical component, requiring the ability to extract relevant information through effective engagement with business areas, strong knowledge of legacy systems, and a high degree of attention to detail. A spirit of curiosity and innovation is valued, with opportunities to explore new methods and tools to solve complex issues.
Core accountabilities of the positions include:
- Developing and maintaining interactive dashboards and reports to support operational, policy, and strategic decision-making.
- Conducting advanced statistical analysis on complex, sensitive datasets and synthesizing finginds from multiple sources.
- Extracting, cleaning, linking and preparing data, to support research, reporting, and evaluation activities across the branch.
- Querying data, aggregating results, and developing reports to respond to ad hoc requests involving sensitive and high-impact information.
- Documenting business rules and validating data accuracy, consistency, and reliability across reporting products.
- Engaging with business areas and system partners to clarify requirements, translate needs into analytical approaches, and communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Supporting the adoption of BI products through user guidance, training materials, and change management supports.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- University degree in a related field (e.g., Social Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics)
- Minimum 4 years of progressively responsible related experience in data analysis and reporting.
The following equivalencies may be considered:
- A related Masters plus 2 years related experience.
- A related two-year diploma plus a minimum of 6 years related experience.
- A related one-year certificate plus a minimum of 7 years related experience.
- No post-secondary education, plus a minimum of 8 years related experience.
Assets
- Experience using data visualization, querying, and analytical tools (e.g., Power BI, SAS Visual Analytics, R, Python, SSRS, SQL, Excel, VBA).
- Experience applying statistical and analytical techniques to support research, reporting, or decision-making.
- Experience communicating technical or sensitive information clearly and collaborate effectively with stakeholders.
- Experience working with justice system data and/or complex, multi-source datasets.

- Hours of work: 7.25 hours per day / 36.25 hours per week (Monday – Friday).
