Role Responsibilities
In this role, you will help transform complex operational and financial data into meaningful insights that support decision-making across the Legal Services Division. Working closely with lawyers, business staff, directors, and executive leadership, you will play a key role in ensuring information is accurate, accessible, and actionable. Your work will help shape reporting practices, improve business processes, and support strategic decisions that contribute to the effective delivery of legal services across government.
Reporting to the Business Operations Manager, the Business Analyst is responsible for the Legal Services Division's reporting function. This is a technical role focused on delivering accurate, timely and trusted information to lawyers, directors and executive leadership - primarily through Power BI, supported by SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and the Division's core business applications.
Our successful candidate turns complex operational and financial data into reporting that decision-makers rely on. Strong SQL, Power BI and DAX skills are essential to doing this well, but the measure of success in this role is the quality, reliability and usefulness of the information delivered - not the volume of code written.
Our Business Analyst’s responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:
- Reporting Service Delivery: Ensure reliable, accurate, and timely delivery of all divisional management and client reporting (weekly, monthly, annual, ad hoc).
- Report & Dashboard Development: Design, build, and maintain Power BI and SSRS reports, dashboards, and datasets, ensuring relevance and consolidating/retiring outdated reporting.
- Power BI Administration: Administer the Power BI environment for availability, security, and performance, including workspace management, row-level security, data gateway, and refresh scheduling.
- Data Quality & Validation: Validate data quality, reconcile information across systems, investigate variances, and resolve discrepancies to ensure defensible reported figures.
- Data Model & Infrastructure Maintenance: Maintain underlying data models, SQL views, and DAX measures, applying sound design for scalability and performance.
- System Support & Automation: Support legal management systems (e.g., ProLaw), resolve escalated issues, perform root cause analysis, and automate processes using Power Automate and Power Apps to reduce manual effort.
- Stakeholder Consultation & Self-Service: Consult with staff and directors to understand reporting needs, recommend solutions, and enable self-service through training and documentation on Power BI.
- Initiative Leadership: Lead reporting and system initiatives from definition through to successful delivery and outcome reporting.
Our ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Business Intelligence Expertise: Advanced hands-on experience delivering BI, operational, and executive reporting solutions with Power BI (data modelling, DAX, report/dashboard design).
- Strong SQL Proficiency: Ability to write, optimize, troubleshoot, and maintain complex SQL queries, views, and stored procedures against large relational databases.
- Power BI Service Administration: Experience administering the Power BI Service, including governance, security, and capacity management.
- Data Validation & Reconciliation: Proven ability to validate, reconcile, and defend reported data, investigating and resolving discrepancies across multiple source systems.
- Microsoft Power Platform: Experience designing and supporting automation solutions using Power Apps, Power Automate, and related Power Platform technologies.
- Application & System Support: Experience with incident triage, root cause analysis, and issue resolution for business applications, coordinating with technical teams and vendors.
- Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills: Strong ability to gather requirements, assess needs, and translate them into effective technical solutions.
- Communication & Collaboration: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences, and demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
- Organizational & Relationship Management: Strong skills in managing multiple priorities, delivering results in fast-paced environments, and building relationships.
- Change Management Support: Ability to facilitate discussions, document requirements, and support change management, user adoption, and process improvement.
