The Ministry Services Division provides enterprise-wide support services for the Department of Energy and Minerals and ensures alignment with and adherence to related Government of Alberta policies.
The Finance and Administration Branch provides financial operations, planning, reporting, procurement and quality assurance services.
The Financial Operations and Systems unit provides accounts payable, cash receipts, procurement, and systems support (i.e. CARS2, PowerBI, etc.).
Role Responsibilities
The Finance and Administration Branch is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Business Analyst to join our dynamic team.
Reporting to the Senior Business Analyst, this role will support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of reliable data frameworks, reports, and dashboards that inform strategic decision-making at all levels of the Department. By transforming complex financial and operational data into actionable insights, this position plays a critical role in helping Senior Leadership make informed and timely resource allocation and policy decisions.
As a Business Analyst, you will assist in designing and enhancing financial planning and reporting processes. You will work with tools such as Power BI and other analytics platforms to build dashboards, reports, and models that help visualize data trends and forecast future outcomes. The role also involves collaborating with business units to re-engineer core processes, implement technological solutions, and improve overall efficiency across financial reporting and planning. Through both qualitative and quantitative analysis, you will contribute to the improvement of department-wide services and operational effectiveness.
You will participate in a range of Departmental and cross-branch projects focused on financial forecasting, variance analysis, and performance measurement. Your support will extend to special initiatives from Senior Leadership and the ongoing automation of key finance and administrative functions. By working closely with stakeholders, you will help streamline workflows, integrate new technologies, and ensure that financial information aligns with approved budgets and government reporting standards.
Qualifications
Minimum University graduation in Computer Science, Statistics, Business Administration, Commerce, Finance, Economics, or other related field, with no related experience.
Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.
The following will be considered assets:
• Power BI expertise: Experience in designing dashboards, reports, and data visualizations.
• Financial planning and process: Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
• Business Process improvement and Automation: Experience in streamlining workflows and supporting automation.
• SQL proficiency: Experience of writing queries to extract, manipulate, and analyze data from databases.
• Strong analytical skills: Ability to interpret complex data and deliver actionable insights.
