Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Bridge Planning Specialist, the Bridge Planning Engineer supports the development of standards guidelines, and tools related to bridge conceptual design and hydrotechnical engineering. This role also provide technical advice on complex projects, supports knowledge transfer, contributes to systems governance and maintain key database activities. 

Your responsibilities will include: 

  • Assisting and supporting the development of standards, guidelines and tools related to bridge conceptual design and hydrotechnical engineering.
  • Providing technical input during conceptual design phase and bridge construction projects.
  • Assessing existing bridges to determine optimal life cycle strategies.
  • Supporting hydrotechnical and river engineering aspects of highway construction.
  • Integrating bridge requirements into highway functional plans and roadway design standards.
  • Managing Level 2 bridge inspection programs for pier scour and river protection works.
  • Participating in flood response operations.
  • Coordinating with regulatory agencies such as Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (EPA) and Fisher and Oceans Canada (DFO).

 

This position requires a unique combination of hydrotechnical engineering and bridge planning skills, with limited formal training available outside the department.

Qualifications

Required:  

  • University degree in Civil Engineering or related, PLUS 5 years related experience or equivalent as described. 
  • Registered or eligible to obtain membership with APEGA as a P.Eng.

 

Equivalency:

  • Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

 

The successful candidate MUST also have: 

  • Minimum 5 year’s experience in the hydrotechnical engineering and bridge geometrics.
  • Familiarity with river engineering processes, hydraulics design of bridges and culverts.
  • Familiarity with river protection work design, fish passage designs.
  • Class 5 drivers license or equivalent plus clear driver abstract.

 

Assets: 

 

  • Master’s degree specializing in hydrotechnical engineering and bridge geometrics.
  • Familiarity with GIS tools and practical hydraulic models.
  • Familiarity with other engineering disciplines related to bridge conceptual design, such as geotechnical, structural, construction, and environmental components.
  • Experience with combining hydrotechnical principles and bridge related highway geometrics .

  • Hours of Work: 7.25 hours daily / 36.25 weekly – Monday to Friday.
  • Location: Edmonton
  • TRAVEL REQUIRED: Occasional travel is required as part of this role.
