The Disability Services Division encompasses the Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) and Family Supports for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) programs, which work with individuals, children and families within the differing program’s mandates and legislation to understand the support needs of individuals, children and families to provide individualized supports and services within the scope of each program.
Role Responsibilities
The Edmonton area is part of the North Zone Disability Services Division within the Ministry of Assisted Living and Social Services. The position of PDD Behavioural Consultant 1 is part of the Community Support Team (known as COAST in the Edmonton area), which is a joint initiative between Recovery Alberta, Children and Family Services, and Disability Services. It exists to provide specialized support and services to individuals with complex behavioural support needs through a range of multi-disciplinary positions including Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Psychologists, and Behavioural Specialists and Consultants.
Reporting to the Disability Services Casework Supervisor, you will assist the people supporting individuals with complex behavioural and mental health support needs to enhance the individual’s well-being and assist in maximizing their independence and inclusion in the community through education, training and resources. You will be required to work closely with team members, service providers and families to address complex behavioural challenges.
Your communication, interpersonal, and problem solving skills will be critical as you interact daily with clients, guardians, community associations and service providers to identify and address the needs of individuals with disabilities and complex behaviours.
The Behavioral Consultant actions the following responsibilities as a part of their daily role:
• Provides consultation, guidance and input to individuals, families, PDD Service Coordinators, community service providers, in order to inform a comprehensive individual plan that involves assessment, ethical decision-making, positive behavior support, behavior intervention, monitoring and review, with main considerations to community placement stability.
• Develops and modifies behavior support plans based on changing needs of individuals, best practice in supporting adults with complex needs, including responding quickly to situations where there is an elevated degree of risk.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of individual behavior plans to ensure they contribute to an improved quality of life outcome. Recommends resources within, community, PDD and other government ministries to meet the service needs of individuals.
• Offers information and expert advice on complex behavioural issues.
• Identifies appropriate services and supports and assist in referral to these as needed.
• Provides education and hands-on training to staff, individuals, families and community partners regarding specific needs and strategies to mitigate risk.
• Provides ongoing education throughout the Edmonton Region to staff, individuals, families and community partners regarding specific needs and strategies to mitigate risk.
• Provides consultation and collaboration with stakeholders, regarding complex service delivery

Qualifications
Bachelor of Social Work with some related experience.
Equivalency: Master of Social Work (no experience required); OR related university degree and 2 years related experience; OR related diploma and 3 years related experience; OR related certificate and 4 years related experience.
Must have:
Understanding of behavioural support theories and best practices
Related experience providing behavioural support planning, adaptive behaviour training and utilizing trauma infirmed practices preferably in a community setting.
Experience working with adults, youth and children with developmental disabilities who have complex service needs.
Assets:
• Case management experience
• Experience working within a multidisciplinary team
• Knowledge of the Persons with Developmental Disability, Family Supports for Children with Disabilities or Children and Family Services programs
• Experience collaborating with multisystem groups and families and individuals

Notes
Hours of work are 36.25 hours weekly.
This position may occasionally require evening or weekend work under exceptional circumstances, such as meetings with families. Further details can be discussed during the interview process. Please note that a valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle are required, as Behavioral Consultants are expected to be in the community for meetings
