As a management employee, in addition to your regular vacation entitlement, managers will be credited the full five days of vacation supplement each January 1st and it will not be earned throughout the year.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Centre Director, Edmonton Remand Centre, the Associate Director position is critical with responsibilities for the assisting the centre director in the overall management, administration, development, co-ordination and monitoring of services in a correctional facility.  The associate director is accordingly responsible for the allocation of human, financial and material resources in a manner consistent with the efficient and orderly delivery of institutional services.

The associate director will also liaise and coordinate with other correctional service agencies and government ministries, offender programs, courts, private agencies, and police agencies to ensure efficient delivery of offender’s programs.

The associate director will manage all legal correspondence and provide required replies as well as be the centre representative in testifying in court for legal purposes.

The associate director is required to manage and respond to all Ombudsman, Human Rights and Office of the Privacy Commissioner requests.

In addition to the above noted responsibilities, you will also be responsible for: 

  • Making recommendations to the Centre Director regarding branch and centre policies and procedures. 
  • Have direct supervisory responsibility for the remand centre’s management team.
  • You will constitute executive authority within the remand centre and report directly on all matters to the Centre Director. 
  • The care and custody of the inmate population of the remand centre while maintaining the safety and security of staff, inmates, stakeholders, and the general public.

To be successful in this role, you must possess strong leadership skills acquired through leading large, complex teams with a specific focus in corrections or law enforcement. You must be motivated to play an active role in the management of the largest remand facility in Canada. Effective networking skills are essential as this position is required to interact daily and maintain positive relationships with law enforcement agencies, other correctional and remand centres, the judiciary, lawyers, service providers and other ministry agents. You must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and must be able to adjust your communication to suit a variety of audiences.  Interpersonal skills, decision making skills and problem-solving abilities are critical. The ability to promote staff engagement and lead staff effectively will ensure your success in this role.

Qualifications

Required: 

  • University graduation in a related field (Criminology, Law Enforcement, Justice Studies, etc.)
  • Seven years of progressively responsible experience (Deputy Director, Assistant Deputy Director, Director, Senior Manager) 

Equivalencies: related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

The successful candidate will bring demonstrated management experience within a large-scale business operation and/or complex organization. Related experience within a law enforcement agency, including most recent emergency management experience within the law enforcement and correctional environment, will be considered a strong asset.

Preference will be given to candidates with direct management experience within the Correctional Services Division.

Post-secondary education and/or continued professional development in leadership, management, human resources, change management, or emergency management will be considered an asset.

This competition will be used to fill (1) full time permanent position at the Edmonton Remand Centre.

Hours of work: Monday to Friday, 36.25 hours per week.

Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening including a fingerprint based criminal record check and vulnerable sector check.
