Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (EPA) is responsible for preserving Alberta’s air, land, water, and biodiversity. The ministry delivers science-based environmental monitoring, evaluation, and reporting to support environment and resource stewardship and Albertans’ safety.
Within EPA, the Airshed and Watershed Stewardship (AWS) Branch is responsible for delivering critical air monitoring services. This includes the operation and support of the department’s long-term air quality monitoring network, responding to environmental emergencies, and providing accurate, real-time data to inform public health and environmental policy.

Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Provincial Airshed Monitoring within the Airshed and Watershed Stewardship Branch, the Air Monitoring Technologist plays a vital role in protecting Alberta’s air quality. This position supports the Department’s Long-Term and Mobile Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Programs by ensuring the reliable collection of high-quality air data across the province.
Key responsibilities include the day-to-day operation and maintenance of continuous ambient air quality monitoring stations and mobile monitoring equipment. This involves conducting daily quality-control checks, performing calibrations, carrying out preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting and repairing a wide range of air monitoring instruments. The technologist will also contribute to the development of monitoring plans, assist with the integration and deployment of new monitoring stations, and provide support for additional programs, such as the Ambient Audit and Source Emission Audit programs, as needed.
Reliable, accurate air quality data is essential for Albertans, industry stakeholders, and policymakers. It informs Alberta’s clean air strategies, helps address regional concerns, supports inspections and investigations, and ensures public safety during emergency situations. This vital information helps uphold the department’s commitment to environmental protection and strong, science-based regulations. Qualifications
Requirements
Education:
Two-year technical diploma in a related field (e.g., Environmental Sciences, Instrumentation, etc.).
Experience:
A minimum of six (6) years of directly related experience in air quality monitoring, with a thorough understanding of:
- Ambient air quality monitoring instrumentation used to measure common parameters on a continuous basis, such as fine particulate matter, oxides of nitrogen, ground-level ozone, sulphur compounds, and non-methane hydrocarbons.
- Ambient air quality monitoring instrumentation used to measure common parameters on a time-integrated basis, such as particulate mass, volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, and speciated particulate matter.
- Data acquisition systems and cellular modem communications.
Other:
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent).
Equivalencies:
Directly related education or experience will be considered on the basis of one year of education for one year of experience, or one year of experience for one year of education.
Assets:
- Knowledge of Alberta’s Air Monitoring Directive (AEP, as amended).
- Membership in a technological or professional organization such as ASET (Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta).
Candidates who do not yet meet all the qualifications may be considered for a position at a lower classification level, with the opportunity to advance to the higher classification once all criteria are fully met.

Notes
This is a full-time, permanent position based in Edmonton, Alberta. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., totaling 36.25 hours per week.
This position requires travel throughout Alberta, with approximately 25–50% of work time spent supporting regional operations. The role may also require working extended hours, including evenings or weekends, as needed to meet operational demands.
