The Court and Justice Services (CJS) Division provides a wide range of resolution and court services for people involved in legal disputes. In collaboration with the courts of Alberta, Court and Justice Services provides various programs and services including educating and helping Albertans finding solutions for legal issues, navigating the court system, offering programs at no cost or a nominal charge, and administrative support to all courts in Alberta. As a SafeRoads Adjudicator, you will independently review administrative penalties, assess evidence, and issue well-reasoned decisions to promote road safety and justice. This role combines critical thinking, communication, and legal expertise in a fast-paced, high-impact environment.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Evaluating written and oral submissions to resolve factual disputes.
  • Conducting teleconferences and video hearings with professionalism and impartiality.
  • Drafting well-structured, legally sound written decisions.
  • Staying informed on relevant legislation, case law, and regulatory changes.
  • Ensuring adherence to procedural fairness and natural justice in every review.
  • Collaborating with peers to maintain consistency and quality in decision-making.
  • Contributing to program improvement through feedback and recommendations.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Cover letter detailing how your skills and experience align with the role's responsibilities, used to assess writing and communication skills.
  • A related university degree (i.e., Public Administration, Public Policy, Law, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, or a related discipline), supplemented by at least four (4) progressive experience in the following areas: 
    • decision writing
    • analyzing evidence and factual disputes
    • making findings of fact
    • interpreting and applying legislation and policy in complex situations
    • writing briefings that include setting out options and making recommendations

 

Assets & Preferences:

  • Previous experience with SafeRoads adjudication or other tribunals.
  • Experience writing formal adjudication decisions.
  • Knowledge about tribunals and the administrative law process.
  • Working experience analyzing evidence or research and providing recommended options.
  • Working knowledge of Alberta’s traffic legislation and roadway laws.
  • Interpretation and understanding of legislation, including the Traffic Safety Act and its regulations, the Provincial Administrative Penalties Act (PAPA) and its regulations and the Criminal Code (Canada).
  • Working knowledge of information management systems and Office 365.

 

Equivalencies are:

  • A related two-year diploma and a minimum of six (6) years of related experience; a related one-year certificate and a minimum of seven (7) years of related experience; or a minimum of eight (8) years of related experience in lieu of formal education.

Additional Position Details:

  • We have three permanent and one temporary, full-time positions available, working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday (8:15 am - 4:30 pm).
  • Location: Twin Atria Building, 4999 98 Avenue, Edmonton, AB.
  • SafeRoads Alberta participates in the Work from Home Hybrid – Please note though that this position would be eligible to participate in the Work from Home Hybrid once the incumbent is fully on-boarded, trained, fully designated by the Director of SafeRoads Alberta and performing satisfactorily in the role.
