The Alberta Chief Firearms Office is responsible for administering the federal Canadian Firearms Program to oversee firearms licenses and registration, maintain provincial firearms safety training standards, assist and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to help enhance public safety, inform Albertans about firearms safety and advocate for law-abiding firearms owners.
Firearms in Canada are regulated by the Firearms Act and Part III of the Criminal Code. The Government of Alberta administers the Canadian Firearms Program in the province, while the federal government is responsible for creating firearms legislation and regulations in Canada. The Alberta Firearms Act clarifies the role of the Alberta Chief Firearms Office.

Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Regional Operations Manager, you will provide operational services for the provincial delivery and management of the federal Firearms Act. The services provided enhance public safety though the responsible administration of firearm licensing, serving a wide variety of stakeholders.
You will undertake and assist Firearms Officers with all actions/investigations in connection with licenses. You will support the Firearms Officers to validate, refuse and revoke licenses and seek prohibition orders. These actions include identifying eligibility issues, including risks to public safety and violation of the Firearms Act and regulations, and Part III of the Criminal Code. These decisions and actions may involve individuals, businesses, shooting clubs and shooting ranges.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Working in accordance with the Firearms Act, Canadian Firearms Programs, and other federal and provincial legislation.
- Under guidance of a Firearms Officer, develop appropriate interviewing techniques that would withstand legal scrutiny.
- Contributing to tracking, reporting and evaluation systems for the operational cycle as directed by the Regional Operations Manager.
- Responding to general inquiries related to the Canadian Firearms Program.

Qualifications
University graduation in a related field (public policy, public administration, law enforcement, etc.); no experience required.
Equivalencies will be considered on a one for one basis.
Assets:
- Experience working on complex investigation files in a law enforcement setting.
- Working experience dealing with firearms.
- Working knowledge of the Firearms Act, and the Canadian Firearms Program.

Notes
This posting will be used to fill four, full-time permanent positions. This position works Monday to Friday, 36.25 hours per week.
Final candidates are required to obtain and maintain an Enhanced Reliability Security Clearance conducted by the RCMP. Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses, will be the responsibility of the candidate. Out-of-province applicants can obtain the required documents/checks from the province they currently reside in.
Final candidates will be required to complete Alberta Peace Officer Investigator training and be eligible to obtain a Peace Officer appointment.
This position requires working with firearms.
