This position resides in the Ministry of Hospitals & Surgical Health Services under the Acute Care Division, within the Cancer and Surgical Services Branch.
Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Director, Cancer & Surgical Services, the Director, Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for Alberta's Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) portfolio. This role leads the development and implementation of policies, programs, and initiatives that support safe, equitable, and effective access to MAID services across the province.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead MAID policy development, strategic planning, and program implementation.
- Provide expert advice to senior leadership, the Minister's Office, and key stakeholders on complex policy and operational issues.
- Oversee issues management, legislative and policy reviews, and emerging trends impacting MAID services.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with government partners, healthcare organizations, and stakeholders to advance Ministry priorities.
- Lead cross-functional teams and collaborative initiatives to improve access, service delivery, and patient outcomes.
- Represent the Ministry on cross-ministry, provincial, and national committees and working groups.
- Foster innovation, continuous improvement, and evidence-based decision-making within the MAID portfolio.
This position requires a collaborative and strategic leader with strong policy, stakeholder engagement, and relationship management skills, capable of navigating complex healthcare issues and driving meaningful outcomes for Albertans.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
A university degree in a field related to the position assignment Health or Business Administration, supplemented by seven (7) years progressively responsible experience.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Assets:
- Thorough knowledge of Alberta’s healthcare system, including Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID), emerging healthcare issues, and government priorities.
- Experience leading complex, large-scale programs or initiatives, including strategy development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement.
- Strong understanding of quality improvement, standards, change management, and transformation principles within the healthcare sector.
- Significant senior-level healthcare or MAID experience, with the ability to navigate complex issues and build credibility with health system leaders, service providers, and key stakeholders.
