Role Responsibilities

Alberta Forestry and Parks is looking for a passionate and highly skilled Utilities Technologist to ensure the seamless operation and oversight of essential utility services throughout the Kananaskis Region.


In this dynamic role, you will play a key part in maintaining and improving critical infrastructure, including water, wastewater, electrical, gas, and internet services, that supports parks operations and visitor experiences. Working closely with stakeholders and contracted service providers, you will drive system improvements and help deliver innovative solutions to enhance service reliability as well as efficiency.

Your duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

•    Manage and oversee existing water and wastewater operations contracts to ensure service standards, compliance, and effective delivery.
•    Liaise with contractors to address operational issues and implement improvements as needed.
•    Ensure adherence to all applicable codes, regulations, permits, approvals, and licenses related to water, wastewater, electrical, gas, and internet services.
•    Stay up to date on regulatory changes and ensure the systems align with current standards.
•    Uphold and enforce occupational health and safety standards in all utility operations and maintenance activities.
•    Promote a culture of safety among staff, contractors, and stakeholders.
•    Review technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics, providing expert insights and recommendations to support utility system planning and upgrades.
•    Perform hands-on work in the field, including seasonal opening and closure of utility systems, and preventative maintenance tasks to ensure the functionality and longevity of utility systems, as well as other associated field work.
•    Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of utility-related projects, ensuring timelines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
•    Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to achieve project goals.
•    Provide field-level support and technical expertise to system operators.
•    Troubleshoot and repair utility systems, including SCADA control systems and related infrastructure.
•    Identify opportunities for system enhancements and implement solutions to improve reliability and efficiency.
•    Work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including parks staff, contractors, and regulatory agencies, to ensure effective communication and operational success.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements;

•    Diploma or certification in a related technical field such as Environmental Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or Mechanical / Electrical Technology, or Red seal certification in a relevant trade (e.g. Plumbing, Electrical, or Instrumentation), supplemented with 4 years of related experience.  

•    Also required: Minimum Level 1 certification in Water and Wastewater Treatment, Distribution and Collection as recognized by Alberta Environment.

Additional Requirements :
•    Strong written and oral communication skills are mandatory.
•    Valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers licence with experience driving in challenging conditions including winter weather and mountainous terrain. 
•    Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office and technical software for data management as well as reporting.
•    Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including lifting and carrying heavy loads up to 50 lbs.

 

Assets: 
•    Previous trades experience or hands-on experience in utilities management. 
•    Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and environments.
•    Ability to lead a variety of initiatives and projects concurrently.

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday with the potential for overtime and call-back requirements.
