Role Responsibilities
The Public Safety Recruiter is responsible for assessing applicants, managing files, and contributing to recruitment decisions across the full public safety recruitment and selection lifecycle, while supporting the development of the ASPS recruitment program.
Reporting to the Inspector, Recruitment and Engagement, this role supports the coordination of recruitment activities, management of priorities, and effective execution of the recruitment process.
The quality of assessment, judgment, and documentation in this role directly contributes to workforce quality, operational readiness, and public confidence in the recruitment process. The role requires versatility and the ability to operate across assessment, coordination, and operational support functions. Strong professional judgment is essential when assessing applicants suitability, risk, and alignment with organizational standards.
This position is a civilian role intended for individuals with policing experience who can apply operational judgment and investigative skills within a recruitment context. The role is critical to ensuring the integrity, consistency, and defensibility of the recruitment process by providing well-reasoned assessments to support selection decisions.
The position supports the selection committee by compiling, assessing, and presenting applicant information in a clear, structured, and defensible manner to enable informed decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage and maintain ownership of assigned applicant files across police, peace officer, and civilian recruitment streams from application through to final recommendation.
• Conduct detailed file reviews, background investigations, and structured assessments to evaluate applicant suitability, risk, and alignment with organizational standards.
• Make evidence-based recommendations on applicant progression that are defensible, consistent, and aligned with ASPS and Alberta recruitment standards.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for applicants, providing clear, timely, and professional communication while maintaining objectivity, professional standards, and assessment integrity.
• Administer and support assessment activities, including testing, interviews, background processes, and Computer Voice Stress Analyzer (CVSA) or polygraph examinations as required.
• Coordinate and drive recruitment activities, ensuring accurate documentation, data integrity, and compliance with established processes.
• Identify risks, inconsistencies, or gaps within applicant files and escalate or address as required.
• Document assessment rationale and recommendations clearly to ensure transparency, consistency, and defensibility.
• Contribute to the development, refinement, and implementation of recruitment processes, tools, and standards within a growing recruitment function.
• Collaborate with People Bureau staff and operational stakeholders to align recruitment outcomes with organizational and service delivery needs.

Qualifications
A university graduation in Human Resources, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Police Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Public Safety, or other related fields, plus four (4) years of experience in a human resources, recruitment, or assessment/investigative role within a law enforcement environment.
Please note experience as a current or former Police Officer with exposure to recruitment, investigations, or applicant assessment is strongly preferred.
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
• one year of education for one year of experience;
• one year of experience for one year of education.
Requirements:
• Experience working in policing, public safety, or a related environment with exposure to recruitment, selection, or applicant assessment processes.
• Demonstrated experience managing files or cases that require assessment, sound judgment, documentation, and defensible decision-making, including evaluating character and suitability.
• Experience handling sensitive and confidential information.
Assets:
• Experience working within a law enforcement environment.
• Certified Computer Voice Stress Analyzer (CVSA) or experience utilizing it in an investigative or recruitment context.
• Experience supporting police recruitment or structured selection processes, including across sworn, peace officer, and civilian roles.

Notes
There are two (2) permanent, full-time, fully in-person positions available
Monday to Friday, 8:15am to 4:30pm, 36.25 hours per week
