Role Responsibilities

As a Compliance Officer, you'll play a pivotal role in ensuring Alberta’s driver training and testing system operates with integrity, professionalism, and public trust. As a Compliance Officer, you’ll independently plan and conduct inspections and audits of driver examiners, instructors, and training schools across Alberta. Your work will safeguard the public by ensuring adherence to legislation and policies, identifying risks, and recommending disciplinary actions when necessary. You’ll be the trusted subject-matter expert, shaping program development, advancing oversight strategies, and supporting a culture of continuous improvement across the industry.
Your key responsibilities include:
- Conducting inspections of driver training schools, instructors, and examiners to ensure full compliance to legislation and policies
- Evaluating and resolving complex compliance issues, including identifying deficiencies and recommending disciplinary actions
- Supporting court proceedings, administrative reviews, and Registrar Reconsideration processes through documentation and expert input
- Developing materials, reports, and briefing notes to support stakeholders and inform ministry leadership
- Managing physical and digital records to maintain data integrity and support performance reporting
- Advising on and contributing to compliance strategies, risk assessments, and province-wide inspection schedules
- Training staff and supporting system improvements through peer mentoring and subject-matter expertise
- Building trusted relationships with stakeholders to foster compliance and enhance overall system performance

Qualifications
Required:
- A related university degree (e.g., public administration, accountancy, economics, business, criminology, social sciences, etc.), supplemented by at least two (2) years of related experience in the driver training and testing system or experience with monitoring, auditing, and investigating. Equivalencies may be considered.
- A valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence or equivalent and a willingness and ability to travel extensively across Alberta
- Eligibility for Peace Officer designation under the Peace Officer Act
- Eligibility to hold a Class 1-6S driver’s licence and, if not already held, the ability to obtain a driver examiner or driving instructor licence
Preferred:
- Holding a Class 1-6S driver’s licence, driver examiner licence, or instructor licence
- Familiarity with databases such as TSIS, ITI, and MOVES/ROADS
- Detailed working knowledge of legislation and regulations such as the Traffic Safety Act, Driver Examination and Driver Training Regulation and all associated regulations and orders as well as departmental policy and procedures
- Understanding of basic accounting, auditing, and inspection principles
Equivalencies are:
- A related two-year diploma and a minimum of four (4) years of related experience; a related one-year certificate and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience; or a minimum of six (6) years of related experience in lieu of formal education.

Additional Position Details:
- We have two permanent and one temporary (up to March 2027), full-time positions available, working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday (8:15 am - 4:30 pm).
- Travelling will consist of 25-50% of the work schedule, with a couple of overnight visits a year.
