Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Contaminated Sites and Remediation Manager - South Unit, the Senior Contaminant Risk Assessor provides regulatory oversight of contamination management in Alberta.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Communicates regulatory expectations to stakeholders.
  • Guides the implementation and interpretation of the Contaminated Sites Policy.
  • Provide regulatory direction to management of contaminated sites.
  • Provide professional advice and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Evaluate the scientific and technical basis for recommendations submitted to the government.
  • Supervises and develops junior risk assessors to maintain consistent regulatory direction.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ph.D. in a scientific discipline related to this position.
  •  2 years related experience conducting environmental analysis on contaminated sites, including risk assessment.


Equivalency: 

  • Master’s degree, DVM or MD plus 4 years related experience; or 
  • University graduation in a related field, plus 6 years related experience.


Assets: 

  • Membership as P.Biol., P.Eng., or other profession recognized by the Contaminated Sites Policy Framework.
  • Extensive knowledge of the environmental legislation, regulations and guidelines related to contaminated site assessment and remediation including: EPEA (Part 5, Division 1); Release Reporting Regulation and Guideline; Code of Practice for the Land Treatment and Disposal of Soil Containing Hydrocarbons; Alberta Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines (2016 as amended), and CCME Canadian Environmental Quality Guidelines.
  • Good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills to deal with industry, public, government and other agencies on often sensitive, conflicting and financially significant issues.
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite.

This is a permanent position.

Monday – Friday, 36.25 hours per week.

Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.
