Role Responsibilities

As a Tenancy Dispute Officer, you will serve as an independent decision-maker, helping landlords and tenants resolve disputes fairly, efficiently, and in accordance with Alberta legislation. This role requires sound judgment, strong analytical skills, and the ability to navigate complex situations with professionalism and impartiality.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conduct hearings and adjudicate residential tenancy disputes under the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), Mobile Home Sites Tenancy Act (MHSTA), and related regulations.
  • Assess and weigh evidence, determine credibility, and make well-reasoned, legally sound decisions.
  • Interpret and apply legislation, regulations, policies, and procedural rules to a variety of tenancy matters.
  • Determine appropriate remedies and issue clear, comprehensive written decisions.
  • Communicate effectively with landlords, tenants, and legal representatives through exceptional listening, speaking, and writing skills.
  • Manage electronic case files and maintain accurate records using Office 365 applications and an online case management system.
  • Ensure hearings and file management activities are conducted in accordance with established Rules of Practice and Procedure and the Code of Conduct for Tenancy Dispute Officers.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining a high standard of professionalism, objectivity, and accountability.
  • Support team operations and, on occasion, provide leadership by acting as a Team Lead
  • Conduct 5- 10 hearings disputes daily.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements

  • University degree in a related field (Public Administration, Business, Commerce, or Law) 
  • Minimum of 4 years experience on an administrative tribunal or in an adjudicative capacity
  • Experience with or knowledge of Alberta’s residential tenancy legislation and other provincial and federal statutes that may impact the hearing process (Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Provincial Offences Procedures Act, Alberta’s Minimum Housing and Health Standards, and the Civil Enforcement Act.)
  • Eligible to meet the requirements to become a Commissioner of Oaths. 

 

Assets

  • Formal training or certification in decision-making, decision writing, legislative interpretation, or conflict resolution processes such as arbitration, mediation, or conciliation, supported by practical experience applying these skills 
  • Experience with or knowledge of administrative law and the operation and functioning of administrative tribunals in Alberta and/or other jurisdictions.
  • Experience with or knowledge of basic legal terminology. 

 

Equivalencies

  • One year of education for one year of related experience or
  • one year of related experience for one year of education.

One full-time, permanent position located in Calgary or Edmonton may be filled from this competition and it may also be used to fill future vacancies.
