The Sentence Administration Unit manages and accurately interprets complex legal documents pertaining to holding and releasing of inmates received from various stakeholders including courts, policing agencies, sheriffs, the judiciary etc.

Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Sentence Administration Supervisor or Chief Sentence Administrator, this position is responsible for the administration of orders made by the court, calculation of sentences, the appearance of youth in court as ordered, and to ensure that the detention of the youth is lawful. This is accomplished by comprehending and correctly interpreting often complex legal documents and other information received from courts, police and judicial stakeholders.
You must maintain a high level of knowledge to incorporate the many policy and legal rules associated with calculating sentences and must accumulate information from the JOIN (Justice on-line Information Network) system and CPIC (Canadian Police Information Centre) system to determine detention and release eligibility. Together with information gathered from legal documents as well as these systems and in conjunction with a high level of working knowledge, you must administer dispositions to carry out the intention of the court.
In addition to the above outlined duties, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Maintaining youth warrant files
- Comprehending and correctly interpreting legal documents
- Preparing, managing, and updating youth legal files
- Complex sentence calculations, including conditional sentence orders
- Interpreting complex legal documents and dispositions prepared by the court to ensure lawful detention or release of an accused.
- Liaising with sheriffs and court stakeholders to coordinate the transportation of youth to their court dates.
- Assisting internal and external stakeholders while applying the Freedom of Information and Protection (FOIP) Act
- Data entry within the Offender Records and Correctional Administration (ORCA) system

Qualifications
High School Diploma plus three years of related experience (Criminal Law Legal Assistant, Judicial Clerk, Paralegal, etc.).
Equivalency
Directly related education or experience will be considered on the basis of:
- 1 years of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year education
Assets:
- Post-secondary education in Criminal Justice or Legal Administration
- Working experience providing criminal law administration assistance.
- Experience working, reading, and interpreting legal documents.
- Working experience with Government systems such as JOIN, ORCA, or CPIC.
- Experience working in a correctional facility.
- Safe-air Training
