Tourism and Sport - one of the Government of Alberta’s newest and most exciting ministries! We lead the development, sustainability and growth of Alberta’s visitor economy. We also lead the growth of Alberta’s non-profit sport system as well as promote safe and welcoming environments for sport, physical activity and recreation.
The Sport, Tourism and Recreation (STAR) Division leads programming for the department. The Division is comprised of the Assistant Deputy Minister's office; the Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation (SPAR) Branch; and the Tourism Policy and Strategy Branch. The STAR Division collaborates with many Government of Alberta Ministries and with a broad range of tourism, sport, physical activity and recreation stakeholders. In modeling the Alberta Public Service Values, the Senior Sport Consultant – Sector Development has an essential role in collaborating with the SPAR branch and division team, as well as other ministries and stakeholders to obtain organizational goals.

Role Responsibilities
As the Senior Sport Consultant, you will be responsible for the planning, development, delivery, evaluation, management and coordination of ministry programs related to the funding and accountability of provincial sport organizations within their role in the Alberta sport delivery system. This is achieved through leadership and consultation in the areas of organizational effectiveness, good governance, policy development and long-term development in sport and funding to provincial sport organizations. The Ministry outcomes and objectives of Alberta Tourism and Sport related to the Sport Physical Activity and Recreation Branch guide their activities in alignment to Federal-Provincial/Territorial (FPT) commitments.
Program Management
You will plan, coordinate and evaluate programs as well as services to meet the needs and expectations of the Alberta sport community within the scope of the ministry business plans and FPT commitments.
Policy Support and Implementation
Working within existing policies, and having the knowledge of current and emerging issues, combined with extensive experience in the area of sport development, organizational effectiveness and good governance, you will develop policy recommendations for approval by senior management to further enhance the Alberta sport delivery system foster safe and welcoming sport environments for Albertans.
Partnership Development
Through an understanding of the business implications and benefits of developing partnerships with other governments, departments, boards and agencies and within the Division, you will strive for more efficiency and effectiveness in the sport delivery system.
Supervision and Coordination
Utilizing strong interpersonal and organizational skills, you will coordinate efforts of staff and volunteers/stakeholders related to their assigned tasks.
Financial Administration
You will administer program and grants budgets of the Sport Physical Activity and Recreation Branch to ensure that expenditures reflect the purpose of the business plan as well as support the overall operation of the unit.
Leadership Development
You will support knowledge, skill and leadership development opportunities for provincial sport organization leaders and program stakeholders to enhance their effectiveness while enabling them to be resourceful within their community, region or organization.
Business Operations
You will use your extensive experience and knowledge of sport delivery systems to provide advice or recommendations to senior management within the unit to effectively resolve current or emerging issues.

Qualifications
Required:
A university degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Sport Administration, or other related field, PLUS four years of related experience in the area of sport administration; or equivalent as described below.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
Related diploma and minimum of 6 years related experience; related certificate and minimum of 7 years related experience; minimum of 8 years related experience.
The successful candidate MUST also have:
• Experience working in non-profit administration related to Sport or Recreation.
• Demonstrated experience leading, coordinating and facilitating small and large meetings/ teams.
• Experience working with local, provincial, and/ or national sport organizations.
• Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in sport programs and initiatives.
• Intermediate to advanced business writing and presentation skills.
• A valid driver’s licence and ability to provide a clear driver's abstract.
Assets:
• Experience working with underrepresented populations.
• Experience coordinating small- and large-scale events is preferred.
• Experience and proficiency with a MS Office in a Windows environment.
• Expertise in a wide range of services such as non-profit governance, policy development and conflict resolution to provide guidance to provincial sport organizations, as well as groups and individuals concerned with sport development.
• Previous grant management experience.
