Tourism and Sport - one of the Government of Alberta’s newest and most exciting ministries!  We lead the development, sustainability and growth of Alberta’s visitor economy. We also lead the growth of Alberta’s non-profit sport system as well as promote safe and welcoming environments for sport, physical activity and recreation.
 

The Sport, Tourism and Recreation (STAR) Division leads programming for the department. The Division is comprised of the Assistant Deputy Minister's office; the Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation (SPAR) Branch; and the Tourism Policy and Strategy Branch. The STAR Division collaborates with many Government of Alberta Ministries and with a broad range of tourism, sport, physical activity and recreation stakeholders. In 2024, the All-season Resorts Act was passed to incentivize the responsible, sustainable development of all-season, year-round resorts in Alberta.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director of the All-Season Resorts Branch, the Senior Manager - Designation and Coordination is responsible for leading the designation of All-Season Resort Areas, engagement/consultation, and overall branch operations. The positions work will directly support development of All-Season Resorts which will drive the growth of Alberta's visitor economy towards the target of $25 billion in annual visitor expenditure by 2035, creating sustainable economic opportunities for communities across the province, all year-round.

 

The Senior Manager, Designation and Coordination provides leadership, decision making and direct supervision of professional and administrative staff to advance the All-Season Resort program. 

 

As Senior Manager, Designation and Coordination, you are responsible for: 
•    Leading the identification and designation of All-season Resort Areas.
•    Consultation and building relationships with First Nations.
•    Engaging and communicating with the public, stakeholders, and municipalities.
•    Coordinating with Forestry and Parks, Alberta Infrastructure, Municipal Affairs and Transportation and Economic Corridors on the ensuring All-Season Resort area development is supported.
•    Ensuring All-Season Resort perspectives are incorporated into other Government initiatives as part of a "one government" approach to tourism development.
•    Accountable for overall Branch operations such as communications, finances and issues management.  
 


The position is essential to drive ASR designated and ensure the smooth operations of the All-Season Resort Program working in collaboration with Travel Alberta, the Director of Regulatory Operations and Director of Policy and Strategy. This incumbent will be a collaborator and a problem solver in and outside of government to ensure that the All-Season Resort Program is successful.

Qualifications

Required:  University degree in Public Administration, Resource Management, Environmental Sciences, Environmental/ Natural Resource Law or related, PLUS 6 years related experience or equivalent as described.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

For Example:
Related 1 year certificate PLUS a minimum 9 years of experience.
Related 2-year diploma PLUS a minimum 8 years of experience.

The successful candidate MUST also have
•    Demonstrated effective communication, conflict resolution and facilitation skills.
•    Project management skills and the ability to successfully meet multiple priorities.
•    Demonstrated problem solving, organizational and resource management skills in working with multiple stakeholders including the public.
•    Knowledge and understanding of risk management principles and how to apply risk into strategic and operational decision-making.
•    Familiarity with natural resource management, sustainable development practices, environmental issues, environmental impacts, environmental media.

Assets:
•    Familiar with GoA and Ministry decision-making processes, including regional/sub-regional planning; regional management frameworks, integrated approvals, and compliance including education, prevention, and enforcement.
•    Experience with change management.
•    Extensive knowledge of regulatory assurance principles and can apply legislative intent consistently often in unique situations to meet the environmental, social, and economic objectives of the Government of Alberta.
•    Knowledge of and experience with the tourism industry and all-season resort sector.
•    Knowledge of GoA and Ministry mandate business goals and objectives.
