Role Responsibilities

Are you driven to make a meaningful impact on mental health and addiction services across Alberta? The Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction is looking for a dedicated MHA Compliance Officer to play a critical role in supporting the delivery of safe, high‑quality, recovery‑oriented care for Albertans. In this position, you will apply your clinical expertise and regulatory knowledge to strengthen accountability, support service providers, and uphold quality service delivery across the province.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct inspections, investigations, and compliance reviews under the Mental Health Services Protection Act (MHSPA), the Mental Health Services Protection Regulation (MHSPR), and provincial Standards.
  • Monitor and assess critical incidents, complaints, and risk indicators to support timely and effective ministry responses.
  • Exercise designated authority as an Inspector under the MHSPA, applying administrative fairness and right‑touch regulation principles.
  • Review client records, observe clinical practice, and engage with staff, clients, and stakeholders to understand service delivery and identify areas for improvement.
  • Apply clinical expertise (e.g. addiction treatment practices, medication administration, risk management, and assessment) to assess the quality and safety of services.
  • Provide education, guidance, and best practice recommendations to help service providers meet legislative and Standards based requirements.
  • Analyze data, conduct research, and support the development of consistent compliance methodologies that balance education, prevention, and enforcement.
  • Provide insights and recommendations that support improvements to provincial standards, policies, and program delivery.

Qualifications

University degree in Nursing or a medical health-related discipline and four (4) years of progressively related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Must be a regulated member in good standing with the appropriate professional college (e.g. College of Registered Nurses of Alberta, College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta, 
College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta).

Required Experience: 

  • Clinical work experience.
  • Experience with medication administration and documentation, physical assessment, and mental health/addiction assessments (e.g. CIWAS, COWS, drug panel screening).
  • Experience with charting/EMR, recovery‑oriented systems of care, harm reduction, occupational health and safety, and client/patient care planning.
  • Experience in risk management, including triage and follow‑up of critical incidents and complaints.
  • Audit/inspection, monitoring compliance or investigative experience.
  • Knowledge of the MHSPA, MHSPR, provincial Standards, and related legislation including the Health Information Act, Protection of Persons in Care Act, Health Professions Act, and Mental Health Act.
  • Knowledge and application of general Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Standards.
  • Current practice permit in good standing with applicable College.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license. 

Assets: 

  • A minimum of 6 years of clinical work experience is preferred. 
  • Knowledge of right‑touch regulation principles or risk‑based regulatory models.
  • Experience in program evaluation, quality assurance, or systems improvement within healthcare or addictions settings.

Hours of Work:

  • 8:15 am to 4:30 pm
  • 36.25 hours per week (full-time) Monday to Friday


Location: Calgary, Lethbridge, or Medicine Hat

Travel throughout the Province of Alberta for on-site inspections/investigations is mandatory. A valid class 5 driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle is required.
