Role Responsibilities

Are you a geospatial expert ready to shape Alberta’s environmental future? Join the Provincial Geospatial Centre (PGC) and become a key player in sustainable resource management. Reporting to the Geospatial Unit Lead (South), you’ll lead advanced spatial analysis, develop custom GIS tools, and deliver high-impact visualizations that support government priorities.

This role offers creative freedom, technical leadership, and the chance to work on meaningful projects that influence policy and land management across Alberta.

What you will do:

  • Providing complex data management and quality assurance for internal government clients, ensuring all parties have current/common information to assist with sound resource management decision making.
  • Contributing to decision-making through the design of high-level spatial analysis products and data integrity and continuity.
  • Constructing digital/hardcopy products for analysis, reports, planning, presentation, or litigation all in support of departmental priorities.
  • Maintaining, upholding and contributing to the understanding of GIS technology within the client/user community to ensure the up-to-date and efficient application of GIS resources.
  • Exploring innovative solutions or approaches to modernizing workflows and service delivery.
  • Providing insight/guidance into project flow and possible avenues for completion to assist clients with decision-making and to assist junior staff with project work.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • A two years technical diploma in Geomatics, GIS or related field and six years of related experience in geospatial technologies or natural resource management.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.


Assets: 

  •  Demonstrated technical expertise in geomatics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and tools like ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, and Portal environments.
  •  Comfort with scripting or developing GIS tools using Python, JavaScript, C#, or similar languages.
  •  Ability to streamline GIS processes through automation.
  •  Experience working with aerial or satellite imagery for analysis or mapping.
  •  Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, GPS/GNSS software, and web-based GIS platforms.

Notes

This is a full-time, permanent position based in Calgary. The standard work schedule is Monday to Friday, from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., totaling 36.25 hours per week.
