Role Responsibilities

As the Environmental Education Coordinator, you will play a key role in advancing Alberta Parks’ commitment to visitor engagement, environmental literacy, and community partnerships. You will lead the design, delivery, and evaluation of educational and interpretive programs that connect Albertans and visitors to the province’s natural and cultural heritage.

 

In this role, you will:

  • Develop, coordinate and evaluate environmental education and interpretive programming for a variety of audiences.
  • Recruit, train and and supervise seasonal, contract, and volunteer staff engaged in public education initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Indigenous communities, NGOs, schools, tourism organizations, and other partners to strengthen visitor learning experiences.
  • Manage projects and special events that enhance public understanding of Alberta’s protected areas.
  • Prepare reports program plans, and interpretive materials to support decision-making and resource management.
  • Represent Alberta Parks at stakeholder meetings, public events, and professional forums.
  • Be a strategic thinker who can balance program development, stakeholder collaboration, and staff leadership while promoting an inclusive, engaging, and safe visitor experience.

Qualifications

University graduation in Education, Environmental Studies/Sciences, Communications, History, or a related field, supplemented by a minimum of two years of progressively responsible and directly related experience in interpretation, environmental education, public programming, or a related area, is required.

 

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year education.

 

Required:

  • Experience recruiting training, and supervising seasonal, contract, or volunteer staff.
  • Experience developing, delivering, and evaluating environmental education, interpretive, or public engagement programs.
  • Experience collaborating with external stakeholders such as Indigenous communities, non-governmental organizations, schools, or tourism organizations.
  • Strong project and event management experience, from planning through delivery.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparing professional reports, correspondence, and public presentations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to assess information and make sound recommendations.
  • Organizational skills to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in dynamic environments
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, social media platforms, and audio-visual production tools.

 

Assets:

  • Experience working directly with Indigenous partners and incorporating traditional knowledge into program content.
  • Experience with Government of Alberta processes in financial management, HR, and OH&S compliance.
  • Experience creating communication and interpretive materials such as reports, signage, and training resources.
  • Class 5 Alberta Driver’s Licence, Standard First Aid certification, and Criminal Records Check (or willingness to obtain).

This position is a full-time permanent opportunity.

 

This position works Monday to Friday, 8:15 AM-4:30 PM, 36.25 hours a week. Ocassional weekends may be required.
