The Environmental Assessment Coordinator manages the environmental assessment (EA) process for projects as required under Part 2, Division 1 of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA). The position requires interpreting various pieces of legislation; leading, coordinating and facilitating intergovernmental agency reviews and coordinating input from the public, proponents, consultants, industry, other government agencies (federal and provincial) and regulatory boards. The position requires a broad suite of interpersonal and project management skills to successfully coordinate multiple concurrent projects within the EA process. The EA process helps provincial decision-makers and public interest boards by examining the impacts of a project’s development/operation and identify approaches to mitigate and/or minimize any negative consequences.
Reporting to the Approvals Program Manager, the Environmental Assessment Coordinator contributes significantly to the consistent province-wide implementation of the EA process. This position is responsible for the development, delivery and support of the implementation of operational guidance and other operational tools to support front-line staff in the delivery of the EA Process. These policy and guidance documents are utilized by the Department as well as the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER).
The Environmental Assessment Coordinator works independently and within a team that includes front-line staff, subject matter experts, statutory decision-makers, managers, directors and legal advisors. The Environmental Assessment Coordinator has a leadership role in the planning, design, development, implementation and evaluation of operational guidance as it relates to environmental assessment. This includes the development of guidance documents focused on both internal and external audiences.
In this position you will:
- Support the delivery of the Environmental Assessment Program.
- Manage the EA process for projects in compliance with Part 2, Division 1 of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.
- Lead the overall review of EA projects.
- Support the transition to the Regulatory Assurance Framework, Digital Regulatory Assurance System, and continuous improvement of Alberta’s Environmental Assessment (EA) process.

Qualifications

The position requires a University degree in a related field (Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Bachelor of Biology) such as plus two years related experience in environmental assessments and/or regulatory approvals.
Equivalencies may be considered on the basis of one year of completed education, for one year of experience.
The position requires extensive knowledge and understanding in the following areas:
- Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, particularly Part 2, Environmental Assessment and Approvals and associated regulations.
- Municipal, Provincial and Federal Acts, Regulations, and Guidelines relevant to the EA process.
- Alberta government organization and Alberta’s environmental regulatory frameworks.
- Alberta’s operational delivery of the EA and approval processes.
- Indigenous consultation on land and natural resource management.
- Comfortable working with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Teams, Visio and SharePoint.
Experience and/or training in project management would be an asset.
Notes
This is a temporary position scheduled to end on or before one year working Monday – Friday, 36.25 hours per week. Edmonton, Calgary, or other large centres in the Province will be considered.
This role primarily works in an office setting, with field visits required when necessary and attendance at meetings within and outside the Region. Regular and ongoing contact will be maintained with regional staff, departmental specialists, representatives from other ministries and agencies, industry and municipal officials, and the general public.
