The Resource Stewardship Division plays a central role in managing Alberta’s natural resources through science-based planning, policy development, and regulatory oversight. It ensures the sustainable use and protection of Alberta’s land, water, and biodiversity by integrating environmental data, supporting conservation initiatives, and guiding responsible resource development.

Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the South Saskatchewan Region Resource Manager, the Environmental Management Specialist will lead the management of environmental issues and program implementation of management actions as part of the GoA's air and water environmental management frameworks for the South Saskatchewan Region.
In this role, your responsibilities will include coordinating the implementation of management actions, supporting analysis to inform the development of management actions, analysis of prioritization of management actions, analysis of best processes to implement management actions, and coordinating processes to incorporate cumulative effects management into approvals decision-making processes or policies, stakeholder engagement, communications and reporting.
Excellent technical, group management, project management, interpersonal, and communication skills are needed to manage the work of various working groups, sub-teams and stakeholder forums (comprised of senior representatives from industry, regional municipalities, utilities, airshed organizations, watershed alliances, industrial associations, various Alberta Environment and Parks branches and provincial departments and, as required, federal agencies).
You will work with a team of Subject Matter Experts to ensure that:
- Priority issues related to environmental issues management and implementation of environmental management frameworks/plans are actioned.
- Environmental outcomes as set out in frameworks are achieved.
- Framework integration into regulatory systems is designed through operational programs and clearly documented.
- The status, issues, and risks of the cumulative effects management program are managed and clearly documented.
- Plans and established deadlines/milestones are met.

Qualifications
Requirements
Education:
A Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., environmental science, chemistry, biology, earth science).
Experience:
Minimum of four (4) years progressively responsible related experience in a relevant scientific discipline or in a project management role.
Equivalency:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Assets:
- Knowledge of air and water quality issues, management, and guidelines, and the ability to apply this knowledge to develop operational programs and work with technical specialists, engineers, or subject matter experts and stakeholders.
- Experience applying project management tools and techniques throughout the entire project lifecycle to deliver strong result and coordinating multi-stakeholder groups.
- Knowledge of systems thinking, sustainable behavior change theories, and group facilitation methods.
- Ability to collect and synthesize technical environmental information, identify any emerging issues and trends, and examine risks to the environment, human health and the department.
- Good understanding of risk analysis and tools for evaluation.

This is a full-time, permanent position located in Calgary, Alberta. Other locations may be considered. The role requires 36.25 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
